Question about Kenmore Elite 78722 78729 Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator

1 Answer

Frost in freezer

This model is a french door made by LG. I get light frost on the upper drawer and ice on the mugs in the upper drawer. The frost comes and goes, but the ice remains. Is this normal for the way the defrost cycle works in this refrigerator?

You can switch off the freezer from time to time to let the ice to melt.

Of course the too much accumulation of ice will affect the freezer.

its likely you have frost inside your tracks. best option for you is to defrost the freezer and let the ice inside the tracks thaw. then after the ice thaws the tracks should work better. If that dosen't help you may need new tracks for the freezer door

This always happens when you don't have 'FROST-FREE' refrigerator. Unplug the power cord or switch off the freezer for about one hour or more when lots of frost stacks (maybe weekly). Turn down the cold lavel to 2-3 instead of higher if there are not so many items in the freezer.

I have the freezer set at 3. There is ice forming all around the door and snow like frost on the food.

Frost buildup on food and ice around the door is due to warm air infiltration. This sounds like a door closure problem. Be sure that nothing is interfering with the drawer as it closes. Be sure to open the upper door and look down at the drawer top to see that the gasket is hitting the steel frame of the cabinet. Look all the way around the entire drawer front checking the seal.
Also open the drawer and hold it as it closes, so that if there is any food product binding it you will see it get hung open.
Good luck.

This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.
