Silvercrest overlocker - the 'red' pathway thread won't progress through

'red' thread pathway thread the presser foot - it just bunches up and jams. I've freed it several times and when I pull it through by hand it works fine. What's wrong? I've only had the machine a week.

Thanks Debbi, I've changed the needles once already when I broke one. the machine was working fine until there was a material jam. This started after I freed it.

Have you tried changing the needle?
since you've only had the machine for a week, I'd suggest taking it back & getting another machine.

SOURCE: The top spool of thread jams tight when I pull the

It sounds like the tension setting is too tight. The tension mechanism consists of two metal disks; the thread runs between these disks. When the pressure foot is down, the disks come together, trapping the thread between them. When the pressure foot is up, the disks separate and the thread can flow freely. (BTW, this is why you adjust the tension with the pressure foot down.)

Take a look at your tension setting and try loosening it. That should resolve the problem.

Let me know if this helps, ok?

Well, I haven't used a Pfaff sewing machine, but I'll answer from my general experience with sewing machines.
If the upper thread is too tight, the force on the needle will bend the needle a bit. As a result, the needle will come down on the pressure foot.
Try loosening the upper thread.

SOURCE: My elna sewing machine bobbin

If the fly wheel is going around then the clutch isn't disengaged to wind the bobbin, you need to pull out the flywheel on your model to disengage the clutch for bobbin winding.

tally_girl_59.jpg
Take thread from thread spool across to bobbin winder thread guide, then back to bobbin and thread the tail through the hole on top of the bobbin. Place bobbin onto spindle on top of machine and then push it against the stop to engage the bobbin winding motor. HOld the thread tail up and start winding slowly until the bobbin core has been covered including the starting point. Stop and trim off the thread tail with scissors. COntinue winding bobbin and give the thread a nudge if needed to wind evening top middle and bottom of the bobbin. A good smooth wind is important. Also don't wind at full speed and keep an eye on the thread reel that the thread is coming off, you don't want it bouncing around as this will **** the thread and stretch then relax it affecting your bobbin wind.

Obviously if you know this and the bobbin winding mechanisim is just not working, then it will need a service/replacement by an Elna repair person.

Why does my elna overlocker suddenly keeps on breaking the second yarn

There usually is not an easy fix for this.

Remove ALL the thread from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and then rethread from the beginning. Give each thread an extra little tug when going through the tension disk to make sure it seats completely. Make sure to thread each thread in order and that the thread pathway is correct for each.

Make Model threading

Even if it is not your specific model, most overlockers (especially within the same brand and like models) will thread the same or very similarly. Just be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading. Also, thread each thread IN THE ORDER specified. Threading the threads out of order will cause havoc AND intense frustration!

What else can I try to get the Overlock tensions correct on a Burnett funlock 003? I have re-threaded checked the threading and messed with the tensions to no avail

You haven't provided symptoms of what is happening with your machine, so this is just a general guideline.

Remove all the threads from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading. Be sure to thread each thread IN THE ORDER specified--threading out of order will guarantee a problem! When threading the tensions, always give each thread an extra little tug to make sure it is seated completely (with one hand, grasp the thread below the thread tree and the other hand below the tension disk and tug--it may make a "pop" as it seats). Verify that each thread pathway is correct.

Set the tensions to the midway point. This is the standard beginning point for overlock tension adjustment, although some tweaking may be needed because every machine is different.

If the machine is still not performing correctly with some tweaking of the tensions, you may want to take it for service.

How to thread a Empisal overlocker.. model 760C

Perhaps the manual would help:

Empisal Overlocker 760C Empisal Sewing Machines

On most machines, it is important to ALWAYS raise the presser foot when threading the machine (although the instruction manual says to raise the presser foot only to pull the thread tail under it). Be sure to give the thread an extra little tug when going through the tension disk to seat it properly. Be sure to thread in the order as specified (Upper looper, Lower looper, Right needle, Left Needle). If the machine messes up, it is usually a best policy to remove all the thread and rethread from the beginning. Threading out of order will almost guarantee failure!!!

ALWAYS raise the presser foot while threading the serger. This releases the tension disks. In addition, be sure to give each thread an extra little tug to make sure it is seated in the tension disk.

Overlocker is not sewing. How can I thread the lower looper without it breaking?

Thread breakage is usually an indication that the machine is not threaded correctly or the tension is set too tight.

As a reminder, if a thread breaks, save yourself some (lots!) frustration and rethread every thread From The Beginning. Rethreading only the broken thread will usually just lead to it breaking again. Sergers are finicky and must be threaded in the correct order. Also, Always raise the presser foot while threading. Your thread breakage is occurring with the lower looper. Be sure that you are threading every guide and give it a little tug going through the tension disk. Usually, the last step is to drape the lower looper thread over the top of the upper looper before it is pulled back and under the presser foot. Be sure to initially set the tension at the midway point between the high & low numbers.

My fabric keeps puckering.

The first thing I would check is the threading. Remove the upper thread completely. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning making sure it follows the correct thread pathway. Sometimes thread will "jump" and come out of a thread guide or the takeup lever. Also, raising the presser foot releases the tension disks and allows the thread to seat properly.

Loosen the thread tension. Install a new needle. Also, some machines have a presser foot pressure adjustment that can be set lighter or heavier depending on the fabric weight. The Owner's Manual should have information. On older machines, it is usually a screw or button above the needlebar that adjusts the needlebar's spring tension. Newer machines would have a dial on the side or above the needlebar area.

Trouble with my Huskylock 680D overlocker Tensions

You need to re-thread the serger.

Refer to the manual or open the front of the serger to see if the threading diagram is there.

With most sergers, you begin with raising the presser foot, then set the tensions to zero.

Begin the threading with the upper looper (curved looper), then the lower looper and the needles last.

Pull the thread under the presser foot and to the left side of the serger.

Set the tensions back to normal 4 - 5 usually.

Lower the presser foot and hold onto the threas tails as you stitch a chain. If the chain of the four threads is ok, you are ready to serge fabric.
