Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

WD my book 320gb not responding

Hi, I used my external hard drive for a year everyday without any problems. 
But now it is not responding at all it seams like out of the blue! Not even the light is on and it does not make any noise. 
Does anyone know what that means and what i can try to fix it? 
I have tried to connect it to several different computers, Mac and PC. The same problem everywhere. Guess that means there is certainly something wrong with the MyBook and not with my laptop. I am am using a MacBook Pro by the way.

    I too have the same problem... the drive was working and then it stopped! no sound, no vibration, no light and noway to open the case to check it out. Boy, would I Iike to get inside the case without breaking it up. I have wondered if the USB connection was not working, cause I realize that you have to have AC current and the USB power from the PC. I have tried to switch the USB cable, but since that made no difference, and since I have 120 volts from the transformer, I wonder if there is an internal circuit breaker inside? Someone out there must know how to fix this thing with out spending $1200 to $2500, [which seems to be the going price to recover the files from a disk].

    I have the same problem (won't power up - no response at all) but I also have two other identical extenal drives (purchased at the same time) that are working perfectly so I know it's not an internal cable issue. I've tried plugging it into my laptop and it still doesn't work. I've had the drive(s) since late 2007.

    Am I out of luck or is there something I can do without paying an outrageous price for data recovery?

don't panic your hard drive might still be working . you say it dose not sign showing it's on. please have any cable that connect the hard disk to the computer checked. I think your cables might be bad.

Assuming PS3 works with FAT32, format the hard drive using the WD's FAT 32 formatter. Call WD and they will direct you to the correct download location for your hard drive.

I have a similar WD 320GB drive - but it is a Passbook. When I first got it, I set it up and it worked fine. Not liking the very short 12" (.3M) cable, I grabbed a nice 6' (2M) version as a replacement.

I began to have read and write errors on the drive galore. I returned the drive and spoke with a tech person at the store about it. It turns out that the cable supplied is "specific" to a degree for the drive. Use of "any old" replacement USB cable would not work reliably. I found later that I had another 6' cable that worked without a problem. The cable is rather thick when compared to some of the others I have and am assuming that it was a quality issue with my first cable that caused the failures.

Result: Use the original cable if possible. Use a good quality cable if the original is not available (experiment with a few if needed). Of course, if the drive just plain stopped working - and it happens - contact Western Digital tech support for help or replacement if it's still under warranty, or bite the bullet and buy a new one.

Can only see one WD Passport 320GB drive at a time.

This is most likely a classic case of them trying to occupy the same drive letter. If you open disk management Start > Run > type 'diskmgmt.msc' and you should see them both there - One with a drive letter and one without, simply right click on the drive which doesn't have a drive letter and select 'change drive letters and path...'. Change the drive letter to something you know doesn't really get used and they should both appear in my computer.

External Drive WD is not visible in Mycomputer.

right click on my computer
select manage
then disk management
identify the correct drive
right click and format,
once formatted remove
then plug back in,
you should beable to then see it under my computer

try and format using your vista or xp tools,right click on the hard drive go to format and format it as a ntfs drive.

Have you tried running a virus scan on this hard drive. Viruses can pop up in many forms and mess a lot of things up.

it is possibly because the usb port you are connecting to is not receiving enough power to power the hard drive and use it at the same time. try another port or check on another computer else probably have to buy a new one
