Question about Dell Dimension™ E510 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Dell E510 Diagnostic light 1 is blinking, 2 is out, and 3 & 4 are solid green

The manual does not specify what a blinking light 1, green, means. SO, that is the first question. The second question is what does the whole combination of 1,2,3, and 4 mean?

I am pretty sure there is a full logic table for the combinations of these 4 diagnostic lights. (Actually there is one more that shows a drum, so perhaps that is the HD diagnostic light). Anyway, there are 3 positions for each light, I think - on, off and blinking. Then, of course, each light covers some area of hardware engaged in the start-up sequence. Light 1 seems to be directly related to memory, since 'on' means 'no memory modules detected' 4 and 5 seem to be also related to memory, but more to compatibility and configuration.
I wish someone at Dell could tell me what the logic table is for these diagnostics, but I couldn't get to the right person.

It all started with the PC going dead durig routine tasks. All it could do at start-up was to get the amber light on. Then, I replaced the motherboard and I got in this situation with the diagnostic lights in the combination mentioned in the first place. The old and the replacement boards seem to be similar, barring a version number A01 for my old one and A00 for the replacement - note the replacement is a refurbished one.

Those are diagnostic lights which tell a dell tech how to analyze the condition of the motherboard if all four lights are on that indicates a failure more which usually suggest cpu replacement

is your computer doing something odd?

1. Remove All External Devices
2. Check the Computer's Power LED
3. If the power LED has not changed unplug the Power Cable From the Computer Disconnect All Hard Drive Power and Data Cables and power on the computer. If still no go.
4. Remove All PCI, PCI-E, and AGP Expansion Cards .
5. Remove All Memory From the Computer
6. Reseat the ATX and 12-Volt Connections . The ATX connector will be a 4 pin square connector connecting to the motherboard from the power supply and the 12-Volt Connection would be the biggest connector with a lot of colored wires.
7. If still no go.
8. Disconnect the Power Connection to the Chassis Fan
9. If the light still flashes then it could be a power supply or motherboard failure. Try a good know power supply first and if that does not fix the problem it is the motherboard. Also check the back of the tower for 4 lights lables ABCD or 1234.
Rate if useful.

A blinking yellow light: power supply is receiving power from the wall, but not functioning properly. This generally means the power supply itself is bad and should be tested or replaced.

My dell inspiron 1525 power light is blinking amber???

Most newer models of Dell computers now have a diagnostic LED surrounding the power button on the from of the computer. When you press the power button to boot the PC, the light should be green and remain green under normal circumstances. Any other lights will help you troubleshoot the power issue you are having.

A solid green light means the computer is operating normally.

A solid yellow light indicates the power supply is operating normally but the computer is not processing data. This could mean there is a problem with the CPu or another component on the motherboard.

A blinking yellow light indicates the power supply is receiving power from the wall, but not functioning properly. This generally means the power supply itself is bad and should be tested or replaced.

A blinking green light means the computer is in standby mode.
So use the LED power light codes if your Dell computer has them. Also pay attention to any unusual beeps or sounds coming from the computer. Then join us in our free computer tech support forums and we'll try and help you solve your PC problem. Sometimes, however, a service call to Dell will be required. If your system is still under warranty, you should always just call them first, as tampering with your computer may void your warranty.

Hope this helps!

My Dell E510 PC Desktop Does not turn on, the front light is green, but isn't blinking and a 3 and 4 show up. It also peeps a couple of times, but does not boot up.

Manual is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimE510/index.htm
Look under Diagnostic Lights. 3/4 is a memory issue. Unplug your PC and open it up. If you have more than one memory stick, remove 1 and then try rebooting the computer. If it still fails, try the other stick instead. You may need to replace both sticks or even just reseat them both.
Good luck!

Check your users manual. Normally if it is blinking it is powering up, but may be different depending on model.
