Question about Brother IntelliFAX 4100 Laser Fax

1 Answer

Faxing is clean, streaks occur when copying

We have a Brother Intellifax4100 When we get faxes, the output is good
When someone tries to copy on the machine, we get a 'bar' on the right edge of the copy
The bar consists of a series of streaks
It's about 1.5 inches wide

Open the document feeder cover. The scanner glass is dirty or you have a bad scanner block.

No, it's usually is a row of LED's, probably one section is burned out. If you want to keep the machine, you will need a Brother Technician to replace the block. SORRY

Whoa! If the problem is a solid, wide black line running down the whole copy or outgoing fax, then the led light at that section of the scanner is dead...but if the problem is horizontal black lines, whether densely spaced or intermittent, then the problem is far more likely uneven pressure against the top of the original as it passes through the scanner, over the white "light bar". Apply gentle pressure with your fingertips on the control panel while you feed an original (not enough pressure to stop the original from feeding!). If that has any effect on the appearance of the black lines, then the problem is that the aluminum pressure plate is sticking (or perhaps that the control panel isn't fully closed). Raise the control panel (which is the cover of the document scanner section) and wipe the plate (which is on the underside of the control panel, extending the full width of the cover) back and forth a few times to free the springs. That will usually solve this disassembly required.

The receiver states that our faxes that we send are unreadable down the right side of the paper--white or dark streak. The faxes we receive are ok

The glass scanner window (narrow strip of glass) needs cleaning. One "spot" of dirt will appear as a streak on the receiving end.
If you "copy" a document you can check the streak and see how effective your cleaning is.

Open the document feed portion of the machine, this should expose the exposure glass. Clean this glass with a good quality glass cleaner and soft paper towel. But sure to check closelt for any spots or streaks.

Black vertical streaks on faxes & copies

On top of the toner/drum cartridge there should be a blue slider, move back and forth 10 times.

If no fix, you need a new toner cartridge.

Dirty copies.

Does this streaking problem occur when printing (not copying)? If it does then you are probably looking at a consumable issue. Alot of times black streaking is caused by a defective or spent drum. Is your drum new? There is also a blue piece on the drum unit used to clean the corona wire that cleans the drum. Have you tried moving it back and forth several times?

If the problem only happens when copying and the streaks are as bad as you make them out to be then you problem have a bad CIS unit (scans your originals for faxing or copying)

Copies and outgoing fax quality

your machine most likely has toner spills in it.
if you send faxes face side down follow these instructions ;
1- take out toner
2- look for thin glass strip on bottom inside the machine
3-wipe clean

if you make copies side up then do the same except look for glass strip on the upper side of machine
