Question about Water Heaters

Rheem model 41vrp40n flashes twice and stops working

The error code I get is 2 flashes. Then it stops working. To restart, I have to unplug and then plug in the water heater and it restarts. Any ideas on what the issue could be?

Thanks for getting back. I called Rheem. They said for my model "41vrp40n", it was either gas control valve or ignition. I ask why it could be ignition since the heater came back on fine when I replugged it. Then they said it was gas control valve only. I'm not sure how good they are as it seems like they took my 2 flash error code and simply looked up the solution on a computer screen. They also said the pressure switch should be ok since the blower starts automatically when I plug the unit back in... I asked if it could be a clogged exhause ventilation but they didn't think it was. So basically according to them I have to change a $400 gas control valve...

Error code means that you have electronic gas control valve.

Copy following link to identify gas control valve, read error code meanings for each, and download service manual relevant to each gas control, but not specifically Rheem since rheem does not post service manuals.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

The fact that water heater restarts, means that water heater is getting gas, getting sufficient air for combustion, thermister is ok, gas pressure is good, etc.
The fact that you unplug and replug water heater and it works, shows that you have power vent model.
Since water heater worked correctly before, 2 flashes with Rheem power vent model could mean that pressure switch has failed.

Flashing code 76 is lost communication between the remote and the burner control assembly CCA (circuit card assembly). The CCA is still under warranty if purchased within the last 3 yrs. Contact Rheem customer service and have your Mod. and S/N available....explain to the agent you are recieving - flashing code 76...they'll walk you through the process.

"Pres sw open" means there is insufficient air flow. either the vent if blocked, or the blower turns too slow/ or died.

SOURCE: The water heater red light

There are many things to check. The single most important test is for 24V at the gas valve after the ignitor is supposed tp be on. 19 V or less and there is either a bad ground or the ingition control board has failed. (Wire ground problems are a high probablilty)

Here is what the book says:

PROBLEM #1 - HOT SURFACE IGNITOR DOES NOT GLOW RED

(Remember to wait for purge time, 17/34 seconds, on models so equipped).

Possible causes

A. No main power

B. Faulty transformer

C. Faulty thermostat

D. Faulty limit switch

E. Faulty blower interlock switch

F. Faulty hot surface ignitor

G. Faulty ignition control

Solution

Step #1

Perform normal system checks of main power, transformer, thermostat, limit

switch, blower interlock switch, and replace faulty component.

Step #2

With power on and thermostat set at its highest position, check voltage

between "TH" and "TR" on HS780 ignition control. If 24 volts is not present

check output at transformer. If no, replace transformer. If transformer

checks out OK look at other controls in the 24 volt circuit I.E.: thermostat,

limit switch, blower interlock switch. Check for 120 volts between "neut"

(L2) and "120" (L1). Check for 120 volts at the ignitor across "IGN" and

"IGN" terminals on the HS780 ignition module. If 120 volts is present,
replace ignitor. If no, replace the 780 series module

PROBLEM #2 - IGNITOR GLOWS RED BUT MAIN BURNER

WOULDN'T LIGHT

Possible causes

A. Improper ignitor alignment

B. Faulty ignition control

C. Faulty gas valve

D. High inlet gas pressure

E. Polarity reversed

F. No earth ground

Solution

Step #1

Check for availability of gas at gas valve. Make sure the manual valve

upstream of the gas valve and the gas valve are in the full on position. Also

make sure gas is being supplied to the system at the proper pressure, too

high will lock-up the valve.

Step #2

Check proper polarity of "NEUT" and "120" on the ignition control by reversing

the wires, if reversed gas valve will not open. If this does not solve the

problem, replace wires as they were.

Step #3

Check for proper ignitor position.

Step #4

Check for a good earth ground by using a meter connected between L1

and furnace chassis. Should read 120 volts, if no, check and/or repair ignition
ground wire or ignition control mounting screws.
CAUTION POLARITY MUST BE OBSERVED

Step #5

Check for 24 volts at the gas valve terminals; "1" and "2" on a 7200 series,

"M" and "C" on a 7100 series, "TH" and "TR" on a 7000 series. If yes,

check wire integrity or change the gas valve. If no, change the 780 series
ignition module.

That is pretty much all of the troubleshooting required.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Copy following link to identify gas control valve and download error code information by type of gas control, and possible service manual.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

If you have Honeywell gas control, then 2 flashes with three second interval can mean pressure switch has failed. And or related issues.

Scroll up on same page to find pressure switch heading among the troubleshoot links.
Or use Ctrl+F find feature on browser, and word search page for 'pressure'
Same page also has Rheem parts list 2010 so you can locate exact part number using model number that shows on label on side of tank.

Rheem does not post service manuals, but other companies do, and they can apply to Rheem (except for the FV system, which varies by manufacturer)

Best that you save product manual when possible because it will have important information including, parts warranty, error codes and parts list. Plus routine recommended maintenance that can prevent outages and error codes

My water heater is flashing a cod 2 then 3 how can i reset this i lost ths manual

First thing to try for any electronic problem is unplug the machine and see if problem resets.
Before calling service technician, open following link for Rheem tankless resources including error codes and possible manual and Rheem chat and contact:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html

Error code 2 and 3 do not show on Rheem/Paloma charts or in typical manual.
Error codes are generally considered start places for troubleshooting.
Multiple error codes can mean PC board failure, but same problem on one unit can have different cause and solution than another unit.

Read the manual and make sure yearly maintenance is caught up.

Add a comment and say what you did to solve problem.

Multiple error codes can mean different things, including bad PC board.
C2 13 might be the oxygen sensor. -0 and no operation indicates bad board, but other things might be notched into same problem like loose connections.
Error codes are starting point for troubleshooting.

I had the same problem with my Paloma a year and a half after installation...contacted Rheem customer service (800-432-8373) and they recommened a local installer in my area. The technican diagnosed the problem as the "flow control valve"; he managed to get Rheem/Paloma to cover the part under warranty...I only had to shell out the money for the install.
