Question about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer
I have tried the obvious things like right clicking the printer icon and property menu, taking out the paper tray, restarting everything, can anyone suggest anything else short of uninstalling and reinstalling the printer. The wireless installation for this printer took hours.
I have a lap top and was having the "printer offline" problem
1) I did the triple click on the printer as in soluyion two to get the IP address which is clearly labled on the 3rd page.
2) Clicked on "Devices and Printers" in the "Start" menu
3) Right clicked the "Brother..." icon and selected "Remove Device"
4) Selected "Add Printer" on the "Devices and Printers" menu
5) Selected "Add a wireless, network, or bluetooth printer"
Nothing was coming up in the search so...
6) Selected "The printer I want isn't listed"
7) Selected "Add a printer using TCP/IP address or host name"
8) Entered the IP adress from the 3rd page of the printout on to the line "Host name or IP address"
9) Left the "Query..." box selected, clicked "next" and printer installed

Before I tried any of the 'reinstall everything' steps, I held the 'go' button down for 10 seconds to get the Network Configuration Page (as per Brother Web Site) and after it printed out, all my other print jobs printed as well.

On Windows XP the solution is as follows. Do the install per directions using the network cable method. Install BRAdmin light off the setup disk. ( password=access)Then, get into Printers And Faxes via the the Start->Settings method and DELETE the printer then (you will need the IP address of the printer, it will be something like 192.168.2.3)
For Windows® 2000/XP and Windows Server® 2003 8
In Printers.& FAXES
Click Add a printer to start the Add Printer Wizard.
For Windows® 2000: Double click the Add Printer icon to start the Add Printer Wizard.
c Click Next when you see the Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard screen.
d Select Local printer and deselect the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer
option, then click Next.
e You must now select the correct Network printing port. Select Create a new port and select
Standard TCP/IP Port from the pull-down window, then click Next.
f The Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard will now appear. Click Next.
g Enter the IP address, or the node name you wish to configure. The Wizard will automatically enter the
Port name information for you, then click Next.
h Windows® 2000/XP and Windows Server® 2003 will now contact the printer that you specified. If you did
not specify the correct IP address or name then an error dialog will appear.
i Click Finish to complete the Wizard.

Just to add onto Solution #1. I did the main solution which worked, but I had the wrong IP address at first. The way to find it is to click on the "Go" button on the printer 3 times in quick succession. Then, you'll get a three page printout of settings -- the IP is on page 3.

In the first place, twofold watch that the printer is both on and associated. On the off chance that you haven't as of now, have a go at unplugging the printer from power for a couple of minutes and after that connect it back to.
Fizzling that, erase the printer in Devices and Printers and re-include it. On the off chance that that doesn't work, take a stab at reinstalling the driver.
