Question about Boating
The key start dosent start the motor and this is my first boat and im trying to fix it with the least amount of money spent
First know that they have a neutral safety switch which will stop the motor from spinning if the gear is engaged. so put it in neutral first.
Second- will it even go round? take the hood off and try to spin it by hand. Just to see if it is free. If it is stuck, check the lower unit oil for a lot of rust and water. That will stop it too.
Next - charge or change the battery,
Take the spark plugs out and see if there is any compression, or are there metal pieces found on the spark plug?
Then- or first- buy a book on your motor and a general book on boating.
Practice un-tying the boat and moving it off the trailer at home so you don't look like a novice at the ramp.
After 5 years the water pump should be serviced- use a garden hose and flush attachment or trash can full of water when running it at home- don't forget to put oil in the gas.

Sounds like the starter. Check if you have power at the solenoid from the battery with just the power on (key turned on, power switch on.) thats good-- you have power-- if not you have a wiring problem from your battery or main switch.
Otherwise you have a starter problem probably.

you have one of two problemsyour starter brushes are sticking or your solenoid is going bad next timme it happens take a hammer and lightly tap the starter if it turns over your starter is going bad if you try this repeatly and nothing then you have a bad solenoid they are not expensive if you do not want to tap the starter then just replace the solenoid the best way to find it is follow your main battery line to motor where it stops and breaks with two posts and then the hot goes to the sarter take a picture of it so if you need to take it with you u acn see where the wires go oriellys probally will have it is round and you battery will go to one post and the hot to the starter will go to the other there will be to little posts on it as well one to the key switch and the other is a groud

May likely be one of two problems:
1. Fuel flow: Make sure fuel tank vent is open and not blocked while engine running. Check primer bulb is working and no air leaks along hose anywhere. Check function of fuel pump and ensure fuel is getting to the cylinders.
2. Overheating: Check engine isn't overheating and that water pump is operating properly while engine is running.
