Question about KitchenAid Food Mixers

Kitchenaid K45 Mixer will only run at one speed, fast

I have a hand-me-down Kitchenaid K45 Mixer. Its an older one with the screw on terminals and says on the bowl base plate it was made by Hobart. The problem is mixer turns on but only runs at one high speed. I have read elsewhere that this is caused by the phase control board. Well my mixer doesnt have a phase control board like this one i see being sold everywhere. Wiring appears different, attachment to unit is different http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-Mixer-Phase-Control-9706595/dp/B000PJ7YHI/ref=pd_bxgy_k_img_y I have also read it could be the capacitor, which i am going to try to replace (part #4160325) first. I also am looking for a decent copy of the parts diagram, all the ones i could find on the web or crappy copies or for the newer K45 which doesnt diagram the older version, with the wiring terminals, capacitor and older speed control. I am just trying to get this thing working, if anyone can help with any info that would be great and thanks in advance.

Http://www.scribd.com/doc/176382158/Kitchen-Aid-K45-Service-Manual-For-Hobart-Made-Vintage-Mixers the resistor value is mentioned for r53 as two values of 90 ohms and 180 ohms when measured with a ohm meter. You may be able to hook up a potentiometer of a high power rating and adjust it till you get this resistance value when connected to the motor. then disconnect it and measure the value of the resistance. I can't guarantee that 90 ohms and 180 ohms is the value unloaded from the motor or if the manual is referring to the resistor value while it is across / paralleled across the motor load. The model you have looks like it is a hobart made model

Here's a link to the older non-solid state KA mixer service manual:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/176382158/Kitchen-Aid-K45-Service-Manual-For-Hobart-Made-Vintage-Mixers

I have read on multiple threads that the capacitor is a 1microfarad capacitor that can be found at radio shack for about $2. It's smaller than the original, but should work. The purpose is to reduce arcing on the speed control points.

Also note the speed control calibration setting procedure in the above service manual....

Is it a K45 or a K45SS? If it is a K45 you will have to replace the filters inside and probably the speed control plate, if it is a K45SS then you need a new phase control board. The K45 is pre 1978 and the K45SS is post 1978. Your information is correct on pre 1978 K45 models that the capacitor is bad, but it might be cheaper to go garage sale hunting and find a second machine as the parts are no longer made and having spares on hand may be a significant advantage in the future, also there are a great many of the K45SS parts that will also repair the K45 mixer so it may not be a practical solution. Watch ebay regularly for K45 parts, they come up every couple of months. On the parts diagram also look for the K5 diagram as it is identical to the K45, one is a 5 quart mixer and the other one is 4.5 quart, same parts same motor same everything.

SOURCE: My Kitchenaid K45 mixer only runs at high speed.

I just fixed my 8 yo mixer! Would only work at highest speeds... first took it apart because it was making a terrible noise. Tthrough this site I figured out how to take it apart and replace the grease. Gears were in good shape, but a small nut fell out of the back while I was working on it. Finished putting it back together, found the spot where the nut belonged- holding the metal housing of the motor to the head. I turned it on and all I could get were the two highest speeds so I took the back panel off again and played with the bottom screw- it seems to adjust something on the wire that controls the speed. So take a philips screwdriver and adjust that screw and see if you get all the speeds back.

That is indicative of worn motors brushes or a speed regulation circuit board problem. It is worth getting it fixed.

K45 kitchenaid mixer quits working under load? When beating egg whites it works great but try to cream butter and the beater stops.

It will be a broken or missing pin through a gear or the planetary or something wrong with the fuse gear. It should be easy enough to find but you will need to split the gearbox cases to check.

KitchenAid mixer speed surges high and low uncontrolably

You can get the high speed back if you want to play with those three screws. there is a timing scheme for your mixer and it is set and adjusted by manipulating those 3 screws. The bottom center screw is for speeds 6 8 and 10. The best choice is to replace this switch, about $10 bucks on ebay.

The mixer goes real fast on all the settings. Whats wrong?

The K45SS is very similar to the 5-qt. tilt-head Artisan Stand Mixer.
You need to adjust the mixer speeds. Obtain a copy of the K45SS Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com. Remove the screw holding the End Cover and locate the three screws from the Control Plate. All three (2 top left and right, and 1 bottom) must
be adjusted. 1. Loosen the lock nuts enough & Turn the 2 top screws clockwise until they cannot be turned anymore. Leave the bottom screw alone for now.
2. Use a dab of white paint or paper whiteout to mark the positions of the Phillips screws.
3. Plug in your mixer and Set the speed selector to "Stir".
4. Turn each top screw One full turn couterclockwise (alternating between Left and Right)
Keep making one full turn at the time (for both left and right) until the motor starts running.
5. Put your hand near the Agitator shaft and allow it to brush your finger slightly. Use your
watch or clock and start counting the number of times the shaft touches your finger in
60 seconds. The correct count should be 60 RPM (Rounds Per Minute). If it is less
or more than 60, give each screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise or clockwise and start counting
again. Now tighten both lock nuts.
6. Set the speed selector to "6" and turn the bottom screw either clockwise or counterclockwise
to achieve a speed of 180 RPM.

For your reference, the planetary RPM's for the 5-qt. tilt-head Artisan Stand Mixer are as follows:
Stir speed - 60
Speed 2 - 95
Speed 4 - 135
Speed 6 - 180
Speed 8 - 225
Speed 10 - 280

Which is the better mixer of these old models: K5A K5-A or K45 SS and what is the difference? KITCHENAID HOBART K5A K5-A 300 WATT MIXER and the KitchenAid Hobart Vintage K45 250 WATT. Thank you

Hello ajlina,

All of these are great home use units, all the attachments are interchangeable between these. The difference between these mixers is the K5 is a 5 quart mixer and the K45 is a 4.5 quart mixer. As I own both of them they are great in the kitchen and have the same durability.

Have any more questions please post to this thread and I will be happy to assist. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a Hobart KitchenAid Mixer Model K45SS and it runs fast on low (Surges speeds up and down)what is causing this problem

Hello Mayfix,

The problem with your mixer is the speed control switch, this switch is located at the back of the unit. It is usually black and has all of the wires coming into it, the Item # 1394070 and cost $27.95 it can be located at RepairClinic.com he is a link
http://www.repairclinic.com/Kitchenaid-Switch-Parts?z=100&gclid=CKSD5NriuKcCFUVqKgodIE2b_g

You will have to adjust after you install you will adjust the two screws at the top of the switch while the machine is running inorder to make sure that you are getting all the speeds. Be careful as there is a possibility of electrical shock if you touch the wronge thing.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Kitchenaid KSM150 stir and slow speeds are running too fast why is this?I just got this machine, its brand new from ebay (america)

It sounds like the speed control plate is not correctly adjusted. If you take the back cover off of the mixer (it is held in place with a screw at the top) and try adjusting the screws on the back plate you may be able to get the mixer to slow down.

You will notice two screws at the top of the speed control plate:
4893809-mz0mnwb1nd52ertzwibinpxu-3-0.jpg If you turn the top screws one quarter turn, both equally then test the mixer it should adjust the speed. Please make sure not to over tighten or loosen these screws as it can damage the speed control plate! You should not have to mess with any wires attached to the speed control plate or the bottom screw.

If you need more information please see the service manual here: http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf
It will specifically go over how to trouble shoot the mixer and how to adjust the speed control plate.

Please let me know if you have any questions

I took a KitchenAid K45 apart to clean (made in

What everyone is forgetting or they just don't know is that...The K45 introduced by Hobart in 1962 and was replaced in 1978 by the K45SS are two completely different machines. With completely different wiring systems. The K45 is wired together with wire nuts and the K45SS used connectors on the Speed control switch. All of the websites posted above are for the K45SS (Stands for Solid State) The manual for he K45SS is easy to get from Kitchenaid as the mixer electronics did not change from it's introduction in 1978 to 1986 when Hobart sold the Kitchenaid division to Whirlpool. The K45 on the other hand is a product and property of Hobart NOT Whirlpool or the Kitchenaid division of Whirlpool. The K45 Manual ... well I just can't find one! They way wires are routed is totally different in the K45 from the K45SS so the diagram in the K45SS manual does not help. Also the brushes in the K45 were square not camphor-ed like they are in the K45SS so there is no right or wrong way to insert the brushes in a K45. Whereas; in the K45SS there are four ways to insert the brushes in their holder and three of them are wrong. The K45SS brushes go into a completely different brush holder than the K45. The K45SS is the same today in 2012 as it was in 1978. The K45 is the same only from 1962 when Hobart introduced it to 1978 when it was replaced with the new Solid State model. prior to 1962 it was the K4-A model and it was different entirely. So if the people asking for help say their mixer is a K45 we should be asking for clarification as to a K45 or a K45SS.

Speed and not running correctly on a ksm150

Hi JIM, Happy New Year! From the symptoms you describe of your sister’s mixer it appears there are a couple of issues that need to be addressed. Issue #1, when your sister found the loose governor counterweights that should have been a clue that the governor needs to be replaced. The counterweights should not come off the governor. From your description that you “put everything back together, the actual mixer runs (but a little too fast on slow)” is an indicator that although everything went back together, the governor is still not functioning properly, so it still should be replaced.
Issue #2, which concerned you more, was “the arcing that is constant on the actual contact points that turn the motor on and off.” The contact points you refer to are the mixer’s electric motor brushes, and although arcing continuously occurs (that’s why the mixer head gets hot during heavy usage) under normal operation, it may be time to inspect and replace the mixer’s brushes; the more worn the brushes, the greater the arcing, which makes it more noticeable while more heat is produced.
Before going too much further, be sure to have your Parts List Manual on hand, too. If you don’t have the original you can easily download a PDF version from the KA website: (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home).
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, KSM150P and select the file: KSM150PSWH0.pdf (773.44 KB) listed for your model that appears under Parts List (61). Check to see that this matches your sister’s mixer model.
Turn to pages 8 & 9, titled “Motor And Control Parts” which provide an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of the mixer’s motor and electrical control components. Locate Illus. Nos. 29 and 19, Governor Assembly and Carbon Brush, respectively. These are the parts that I would replace – one governor and two carbon brushes.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer.
If you feel troubleshooting and repairing is beyond your capability, then I would seek out a local small appliance repair shop in your area. KA Customer Care can give you names of local KA authorized repair shops in your area, but you can also do an online search to supplement what KA may provide you. Call to explain your circumstances and find out their hourly rate and get an estimate of what they think it would cost to repair your mixer. Also, always obtain three or more estimates – do some comparison shopping.
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA
If this solution has been helpful, please rate it, thanks! – hslincoln
