This largely depends on the type of the watch.
Generally you can carefully pry the back of the watch off (after you've taken it off!) with a thin knife. If your watch is waterproof there will be a rubber O-Ring under the back, so be careful to not damage it, or your watch will no longer be water proof.
Watch batteries can be found in many convenience stores, and at any place that sells watches. In fact some stores that sell watches, generally large clothing stores like Kohl's or JC Penny's, will replace the battery for you if you buy their batteries. I would advise calling ahead before visiting the store though, Walmart refused to replace my battery because I did not buy my watch at Walmart.

I need a battery for a Wittnauer men's Watch, TTC Longlife model. Heard the batteries are not available, may need a kit since the back is a lithium iodine pace maker battery. Watch is probably 20 years...

mcdevito75 Here, hopefully you didn"t buy the batteries all from the same store, as watch batteries and all batteries have a shelf life of not too long. You may have bought weak batteries if all were bought from the same store, nothing to do about that as who knows the strength of packaged batteries. If you did buy all the batteries from one store, try another store and buy another battery, If the watch still stops and goes, your watch may be wearing out, specially if the watch is over 10 years old.

Open the watch case back, undo the battery contacts, memorize battery polarity, memorize all the writings on battery, buy exactly the same one and repeat all actions in reverse.

Wittnauer and Bulova are better watches, usually sold at better jewlery stores. Perhaps you can get more information from a better jewler in your city.

Hi All,
I received an email from Timex customer tech support to take it to a jewler which pretty much means buy a new one. Not worth the cost of the battery and repair. I have the tools so I might as well try it myself. Either way, I will either fix it or buy another watch.

Ahh, you have one of those watches that have a long battery life. This watch has a lithium iodine battery, which power pace makers. Here's the name of it:

Replacement watch batteries

When you buy your watch the manufacture puts in a battery that is made to last 5 years so that the watch can sit on the shelf and not need the battery changed before you have even bought it. Batteries you buy from a store or a watchrepair usually last about 1.5 years. Sometimes you can find a watchmaker who carries the five year batteries, but most people don't want to pay the $25-$30 to have it installed so most places won't carry them for rear they will never sell.I would also tell you NOT to buy your batteries from a grocery store or a Wallgreens type place because those batteries could have been sitting there for months, or even over a year. If you go to a watch repair they go through so many batteries that almost evey time you are getting a fresh battery.
