MFC 8460N fax part is off hook all the time. Can't hang it up. Takes telephone line as soon as telephone cable is connected to the outlet. Do you know how to reset it/hang up telephone connection?

Followed instructions -- no change. When opened the front door (the one to remove/replace the drum) and pressed "clear" the drum menu appeared asking if I want to replace the drum. Pressed 1 as instructed. Fax is still off-the-hook. My tel is +1-918-398-0252 (Okalhoma, USA) GMT - 6 hrs if anyone wants to call me and skype is akulisz.

There is no way to do this manually. Your internal switching relay has failed.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

(unplugging for XXX minutes will not reset this relay)

It sounds like the relay that is inside the phone system needs to be replaced. The relay should be in the normal closed posistion, meaning that as soon as the hand set is removed it goes straight to closed (making the connection for dial tone). MFC 8460N fax part is - 8c15749.jpgWhen the receiver is on the relay (button) it disconnects the circuit. If youreplace this then this should correct your problem. Please rate this solution.

open up menu, then select printer, and from there printer reset.

also look for factory reset in the menus.

I have to say blueextc's solution makes complete sense and is most likely the right solution.

Need to hook up a brother MFC-210c so it can fax

Install the software (Brother MFLPro0 relevant to the printer. If you do not have the original CD download the appropriate suite from Brother Solution Center.
When you install the software you will be asked to choose USB, or Local Network. You can always install the USB and connect the printer to the calculator through USB. Different installations for different connection types (USB, LAN)
After you configure the software, you can open the Control Center 3 software and use the fax.
To be able to fax, you need to connect a telephone cable to the port marked line. After you do try pressing the unhook button. If connection to the phone line is correct you will hear the tone.
The MFC can fax without being connect to a computer, just the phone line.

I am trying to fax and it says "poor line condition/out of memory" please help on what to do

> poor line condition

Disconnect it from the telephone wall-jack.
Connect a telephone-handset to that wall-jack.
Make a call to the FAX-number that you are trying to reach.
Listen. Do you hear "noise" or "static", due to terrible telephone-wires,
either from your location to your nearest telephone-exchange,
or from the target telephone to their nearest telephone-exchange.

> out of memory

Use the control-panel on the printer to delete "old" sent/received FAX documents, to clear-out some memory.

I cannot send fax

Hi there!

For you to send a fax with the Brother Fax you can try these steps:

1. First make sure that you have a dial tone by lifting the handset or just by pressing the hook/speakerphone button. Once you have verified you have a dial tone press the hook button again to return to the main screen or hang up the handset. LCD should display the date & time

If you don't have a dial tone make sure that the telephone line cord is connected on the fax machine's Line jack. If you don't have a dial tone still, connect it to another working outlet. If you don't have a dial tone still, connect a working telephone on the wall jack to see if you'll get a dial tone. If you get a dial tone on the regular phone then problem is either with the line cord or the fax machine.

2. Once you have the date & time on the LCD screen, Load the document that you want to send on the automatic document feeder which is directly above the LCD screen.

3. The LCD screen should change from the date/time to "Enter Fax No. & Press Start" Once you got this screen dial the fax number and then press Start.

Hope this helps. Rate if it works.

Thanks!

I have a brother mfc 6800 and do I need a telephone line on it?

You will need a phone line connected to the MFC 6800. If you have a separate line for your fax number, make sure you connect this line to your MFC 6800. If you have a different ring, but on the same line as your phone number, you'll need to set up your MFC to utilize the distinctive ring (see the manual for setting this up).

How do I set it to receive a fax? I'm working in an internet cafe and people are trying to send me a fax but it won't let me. How do I do so?

Use a 4-wire telephone-cable to connect the telephone-port on the unit to a live telephone-jack in the wall.

Use your cell-phone to "dial" the telephone-number associated with that telephone-jack. Listen on your cell-phone for the unit to "ring" and for it to "answer" the telephone-call. If it does not answer, check the configuration on the ALL-IN-ONE.

Hi,

I had the same problem using my Brother MFC 8460N fax on the same line as my regular telephone, which has an answering machine.

There was nothing wrong with my equipment. It was a set-up issue. I solved it as follows, and maybe this will be helpful to you:

Here's what I did, step by step:

1. Put your MFC and your telephone near each other, and within reach of a phone wall jack.

2. Go to the fax machine. Take the telephone line with the clip on the end of it that comes out of the fax machine. Put that into the telephone wall jack.

3. Go to the answering machine. Take its telephone line with the clip on the end of it and put that into the BACK OF THE FAX MACHINE. The port on the back of my fax machine says something like EXT TAD which means external telephone answering device.

4. Go back to the fax machine. You'll now need to play around with the menu options for the fax. My Brother MFC shows this stuff in a little screen on the front. Try and find the Fax Setup options. Next, try and find the Fax Receive options. If you do, select something like External TAD fax receive mode. Do not give up, you're almost done.

5. Next, set ring numbers on both devices, the fax machine and the answering machine. I set both devices' ring numbers to 4. I don't know if these are the optimal settings, or what happens if you set them at different ring numbers. I only know that a "4 and 4" setting works for me, and am not inclined to mess with it.

6. Final detail: the setup should be transparent to a voice caller. Someone who is sending a fax, though, might be a little confused IF, like me, they lean over to listen to their fax machine dial and screech, just to be sure it's working. Such a person may faintly hear my outgoing answering machine message before they heard my fax machine's screech kick in. They might think that they had a wrong number, cancel the fax, try again, call me with questions, etc., etc. So I changed my outgoing message to something like: 'You have reached xxx xxx xxxx. To leave a voice msg, please wait for the tone. To send a fax, please continue the transmission and it will be printed. Thank you!'

That's it. Hope this was helpful.

Best,

Wilbere

Can't receive FAXes

If this is a new fax machine just setup, make sure that the telephone wire from the wall jack in plugged into the rear of the printer in the port named "Line". Not "EXT".
