Question about Canon PowerShot A540 Digital Camera

6 Answers

Can't access photos on 2 GB SD camera card.

I can't open my 2 GB SD camera card. I took several photos while my Canon A540 camera was flashing a low battery symbol. Then I got a "Memory Card Error" message. Now I can't get to the several hundred photos that are on the card.

Is there any way to recover the photos. I took it to my local camera center and they tried three different recovery programs to no avail.

Thanks,
June

Don't worry! As long as you take the right steps, you do have chances to get all your deleted photos back:
Step1. Stop using this camera memory card in case that any new file would rewrite your original data.
Step2. Insert this camera memory card to your computer.
Step3. Download a photo recovery freeware to your computer and start to retrieve all your lost data back:
http://micro-sd-card-recover.blogspot.com/2013/11/recover-photos-from-Micro-sd-card.html
In fact, this freeware has ever successfully saved all the inaccessible data of my friend off from his camera memory card. So, I believe it can also work successfully on your card, too.
Read more information of this freeware here:
http://www.4cardrecovery.com/
Step4. Save and back up all the restored data on a different memory card or drive in case of data recovery failure.

Perhaps, you've not selected the right data recovery programs.
In your case, you can try a SD card photo recovery freeware that always can thoroughly scan your card and do its utmost to recover all your inaccessible photos:
http://www.freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/02/sd-card-picture-inaccessible.html
This freeware helped a lot as the memory card of my friend was mistakenly formatted. It had finally restored all his lost photos back successfully.
Therefore, it could also work perfectly on your SD card.
Download this freeware here:
http://blog4mark.blogspot.com/2012/12/sd-card-photo-recovery.html
Note: Next time, you'd better back up all your important photos on different memory cards or drives in case of the similar data recovery problems.

You may try some photo recovery software to rescue the files on your digital camera sd card, here are some for your options.

Photo Recovery (for Windows)
Photo Recovery for Mac

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

It's a lost cause. The A540 works with SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work in devices not designed for them. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Locked card

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

I have a Canon PowerShot A540 Digital Camera I got a new memory card it is a sandisk SDHC 8 GB but I am getting a memory card error message.... What can I do?

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Please note that your particular model camera can only use up to 2GB standard SD cards. These are relatively inexpensive these days, and may be purchased on Amazon if your local store no longer carries them. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problemlisted here.

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Other causes include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.
You also mention recovering photos saved on the card. If you actually did take pictures with this card (assuming it's a 2GB or less standard SD card, as 4GB SDHC was not designed for your camera), you may be able to recover the photos using recovery software. See this other link.

Does not work with 8mb memory card. Why not please? Canon A540. Problem occurs when change a 2mb card for a 8mb card. Have not tried anything to fix problem

The A540 is designed to work with SD cards. Your 8GB card (I assume you really mean gig, not meg) is actually an SDHC card (SDHC stands for Secure Digital High Capacity). While SDHC cards will fit into SD slots, they will not work in SD devices. You need to keep using SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Can't open SD camera card--error message.

1. Do not save any new file to memory card.
2. Connect your card to computer. You should see memory card shown as a drive letter (like H:) in My Computer.
3. Download a recovery software, recommended one is this photo recovery (simply because i was using it and it worked)
SD Card Photo Recovery
4. Install and open the photo recovery program, select your memory drive, and click 'Start' button to start scanning process which will find your deleted photos.

You may refer to this tutorial

hope this helps.

Asking what to do?

8 GB is more than your A540 can handle. You can check with Canon, but I'm pretty sure that the max that your camera will understand is 2GB. Additionally, your 8GB card is most assuredly an SDHC card and not a standard SD card. Your A540 also does not understand SDHC format. The max card that you should buy for that model camera would be a 2GB standard SD card. These are very inexpensive these days and run about $6, shipping included:

Remove the SD card from the camera. Look for the tiny slide switch on the side of the card. Slide this switch back to the unlocked position (opposite of whatever its at now).
