I have this problem.  I was told by a GE technician that it's one of two problems, either the defrost drain tube is clogged or the defrost heater is malfunctioning.  I'm letting the ice melt in the defost right now and see if I can clear the drain tube.  Then I'll run the unit again and see if the problem returns.  If it does, then it's big bucks to replace the defrost heater. GRRR!

My Monogram refrigerator is not even three years old but it is freezing up too. Was told by the tech it could be a clogged drain tube but as I was defrosting the evaporator the water was clearly draining thru the tube. Within just a few hours of turning the unit on after defrosting the ice was already reforming. Looks like some other problem that I hope is covered by the extended warranty. There were only two all refrigerators on the market when we built but I am already regretting buying a GE. I guess it really does stand for 'Good Enough'. POS!

Defrost Heater is easy to replace. I have to do it once every 3-4 yrs.

I have had the same problem with ice forming. I found the problem is from the ice maker. The water fill tube delivers water to a plastic piece that acts like a funnel. The water goes through this plastic piece into the ice maker. Ice forms in the plastic funnel piece causing the water to overflow into the ice bin and freezer.

GE Monogram refrigerator/freezer problem/ice dam i - c00398c.jpg Here is a picture of the Ice Dam in my Kenmore bottom freezer unit. After some troubleshooting, I found the evaporator defrost heater thermostat was bad. Low cost and easy item to replace. It is clipped to the round coil in the upper right side in my picture. I cut the wires and spliced in the replacement. It will take a couple of days to verify the auto defrost cycle is working again. Good luck!

Its almost a year ago since I replaced the evaporator defrost heater thermostat. The freezer is working just fine. The thermostat was less then $20 purchased online. Replace that first before trying other more costly repair. Just make sure you get the correct one for your model.

Hey Rkraft,

i may have answered that question in the comment ya posted on the other Monogram

But now as i think about it how is the frost pattern on it is part of the evap coil covered in ICE (not frost) that could be a sign of a sealed system problem but only if part of the evap coil is iced up and the tube i spoke about on in that other comment isnt frozen

Ice on the food

why did you stop the ice maker? was it not working properly? was it over flowing or leaking? do you have a sheet of ice forming in the ice maker tray? if your ice maker was leaking then your water valve is not shutting off completely and could be leaking down on the food. if this is the case - you need to shut the water line off coming into the refrigerator and replace your water valve.

if it is frost that is forming on your food instead of ice then you should check to see if the refrigerator is defrosting properly. if the refrigerator is not defrosting properly you would also first notice that the refrigerator is not cold enough and then later that the food in the freezer eventually thawing.

Have the fridge pulled out and check behind it. I had same model and it was leaking into my walls/floor and caused thousands of dollars in damage to my kitchen. BLACK MOLS Covered my walls/cabinets and made me sick. Please be very careful with this excess water coming from this model. GE should recall it but will not unless forced. Not Cool.

Here is a link to common ice maker problems. Chances are you have a pin hole in the water line. It may also be a leaky water valve which is on that link. also check for a broken ice mold. Best of luck.

Water leaking from top of freezer into icemaker and right side of freezer. Coils, etc. are clean.

Is the water condensing and winding up in the ice maker or is there an actual leak in the ice maker water feed line?

Sounds like the icemaker mold is leaking so the whole icemaker should be replaced.  Leaking water will get on the icemaker heater and cause condensation which then freezes and makes frost.
