Question about Whirlpool Amana Refrigerator Water Filter WF401S

Water on floor - french door refrigerator with freezer below

Whirlpool/Amana Model AFF2534FEB4 SN K05075066 Purch 3/31/2011 Yes Icemaker in bottom freezer section; NO chilled drinking water; NO water filtration cartridge; NO water/Ice through door. Problem = Water on floor in front of refrigerator. Bottom drawer Freezer compartment has built-in 1/2" depression to collect condensation from auto-defrost cycle. Depression is full of frozen water which I remove every 1-2 days or else I end up with water on the floor. This bottom compartment has NO drain hole to let condensation water out. Using a dollar bill I verified that the freezer gasket is making 100% contact all around the door. There is an energy saver switch - when I turned it OFF - the problem seems to have stopped.

Instead of taking apart the whole freezer section, this morning I removed the lower plastic grill [which we always vacuum] and found GOBS of dust bunnies on evaporator coils and in pan. Duh - I feel so stupid. So I vacuumed that area totally with a long nozzle, removed the layer of ice and dried the freezer pan, left the energy saver switch off ... and will check again in the morning and report back.

Jim have you been able to get the condensate drain open?

  • Jimbo213 Jul 30, 2013

Apparently YES because I was able to inject 1 oz of hot water five times into the drain grate and it disappeared. Now at day 3 and ice is not forming in the lower compartment. But I was not able to really run anything like a pipe cleaner down the drain tube to clear any "gunk" because I can't figure out how to remove the upper freezer basket.

Yes the bottom compartment does have a drain opening but to see it you will need to remove the rear panel covering the evaporator inside the back wall of the freezer compartment. See item location number 11 on page 3 of the parts list. That will need to be removed so you can reach the drain inside the freezer compartment. The fresh food section also has a drain. Testimonial: "John was very helpful and sent the applicable diagrams. He was not able to provide guidance on how to remove the upper freezer basket so I couldn't take the freezer compartment apart - thus I was unable to follow his disassemble / clean / reassemble instructions. Thus I'm not really sure how long the drain tube will remain clear."

Still have ice but build-up pattern shows that frig isn't level. Build-up is highest in front-left corner ... zero ice in back right corner. I'm going to level it up, remove the ice, and check again in the morning. QUESTIONS: (A) is cleaning out the hydrator drain a necessity too? (B) can you give me a guess as to how long it might take a 1st timer to do all the steps [disassemble, clear the drain, reassemble]. I am a pretty good handy-man: am I to expect 1-2 hours or 4-6 hours? Thanks. Jim

  • Jimbo213 Jul 27, 2013

Thanks - I really appreciate the continued communication and your encouragement. It is now 2 hours since starting. Unplugged refrigerator. Dumped ice tray and left outside to dry. Turned ice maker off by moving arm up. I managed to find white clips [for want of the correct term] and was able to remove door slide [#28] after lifting out bottom basket. Removed 3 screws [#30] on each adapter slide [#29] and removed. The top basket is riding in another channel [#7 I think] that I could not remove and therefore could not remove the top basket. I re-installed the door slide & 3 screws on each side. Then I pulled top basket as far forward as I could and positioned a hair blower at the drain about 10" away and left it for maybe 20 minutes, wiping up quite a bit of water. Tried to push a 12" long cable-tie-wrap down the drain tube - but without being able to remove the back panel I couldn't really hit the drain tube [household wire didn't work either]. I did squirt about 1 oz of very hot water five times into the evaporator cover slots [#11] and I could not see it pooling up in the drain pan so I thought "success???". Replaced freezer door and lower basked. Plugged in refrigerator. I'll report back Sunday. Next I leveled the frig using the two front foot brakes [#6]. Got it perfect side-to-side. Front-to-back it is 1/4 bubble tilted toward the back. I'd still like to know how to remove the top basket. Thanks - Jim

Hi,
Sorry your having trouble so soon!
First thing you need to check is inside the freezer section.
The freezer fan, the fan is W10128551 and should be running
along with the main compressor. Since the freezer is working,
I would check the food on the top drawer or on the freezer door shelf.
They too might be soft..without the fan.
I would You tube 'evaporator fan motor replacement Amana bottom freezer model' Yes I know it say's Whirlpool, but your unit is really
a Amana designed unit. I would give this a difficulty of 3 out 5 wrenches.. Take your time..

You will have to look in the freezer section and see if there are holes in the left side wall to mount the icemaker and also if you look at the left rear of freezer section to see if there is a spot for the harness to plug in. Also look on the model serial tag inside unit to see if they listthe part number to add on icemaker kit.

I have an Amana Side By Side, 9901199238, drinking water does not come out regularly, water goes to ice tray all the time

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
Check Temp inside freezer. It has to be down to about 10 or 15 degrees
This can cause slow ice making if its too high even tho its freezing everything else at 25 degrees
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
The icemaker is 110v
See if water is in icemaker.
Pour water in Ice Maker and wait to see if it ejects.
If it ejects thenyou need to replace water valve in rear bottom of fridge(Its the part that
attaches to water line out of wall)
If it doesn't eject then it is a faulty Ice Maker.
If its leaking or no water at icemaker or door either one, then the valve at the rear bottom of ref needs replacing
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if freezer control is turned WARMER, which makes the Ref. colder
Also if it is getting drinking water to the door but not to the icemaker (or vice versa) Then you need to replace
the water valve at the bottom rear of the fridge. It is a double valve and one side is not working
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath
WATER SPLASHING IN FREEZER AT ICEMAKER
THE FILL TUBE IN BACK OF REFRIGERATOR CAN SLIP
AGAINST THE FILL RESERVOIR CAUSING A PARTIAL BLOCKAGE
OR BECOME CLOGGED WITH ICE.
REMOVE THE ICEMAKER AND INSPECT THE FILL TUBE.
RUN WATER IN TUBE TO ELININATE BLOCKAGE AND CHECK
TEMP IN FREEZER. IF TEMP IS BELOW 0 DEGREES, THATS
OVERKILL AND USUALLY A WASTE OF ELECTRICITY TO KEEP IT THAT COLD, NOT TO MENTION THE FILL TUBE FREEZING UP

Too much water in amana bottom freezer ice maker

Try closing the valve partially on the incoming water to the icemaker. Close it to a trickle. Water is fed to the icemaker by a short timer. Too much water pressure means too much water. If this helps it but not solve it, get the spec sheet for the icemaker and adjust to make cubes smaller. This shortens the timer. If no joy, you may need to replace icemaker module.

11 year old amana bottom freezer icemaker drips water when filling tray

Hello dunc444444
Welcome,
You said, Bottom freezer works fine, but upper refrigerator has no cold air

Is your freezer so full that it is packed to the top especially in the rear?
Refrigerators and freezers share the air from the compressor and travel through vents in the rear of the freezer and fridge.
Sometimes it can effect the cooling in the fridge if the freezer articles block the vents!

The water overfilling in the ice maker is an ice maker problem only.
When we install an ice maker there is a short white plastic tube that we push through the rear
hole of the fridge which supply's the water to the maker, the outside water line attaches to this.
That tube we push through the fridge must go in till it stops. And empties in to a little sistran at the rear of the ice maker. Make sure it did not sip out or backwards a little when you may have moved
rolled the fridge out to clean under it!

Also you need periodically to remove the front grill down in front of the fridge and gently run a refrigerator brush under the coils to clean out the dust that may block air flow over the coils.(the coils are metal black tubes that run back and forth along the bottom of your fridge.
The vacuum will not reach in to that tight space. That's why they make a special brush for this chore.
Let me know how you do?

Amana ice-maker

Very curious. When you say the tube to the ice maker was disconnected I am unsure as to which tube you are refering to. However hopefully a few pointers might help a damsel. Most units have the water supply enter into the cabinet through a two way water solenoid valve (i.e. one for chilled water one for the ice maker). It then normally enters the top of the freezer section for the ice maker. It then drops down inside the freezer section to the icemaker module. Therefore the only control over the water for the icemaker is the solenoid valve which is controlled by the icemaker "module". A trick is to switch the control at the solenoid valve so that you can use the chilled water dispenser to check if the water valve for the icemaker is working. If it is then you probably have a problem with the icemaker module or the temperature in the freezer section (which you would probably have noticed if that was the case). If you have a problem with the module then you normally have to replace the module as they dont like supplying spares for modules.
Anyway hope this is of some help and good luck.

ps model is normally near the salad drawer or top of the fridge section dependent on brand.
