Question about Kenmore 73502 / 73504 / 73509 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
My Kenmore 73503 model with the french doors freezes food in all three lower compartments in the frig making them useless for vegetables or beverages. The thermostat doesn't seem to make a difference. When it was new I had a sears repairman out who replaced the thermostat but that didn't fix it. It is now at least 4 years old but it was expensive new. Can we repair it?
Kathleen, you'll have to provide an accurate model number from the inside of your fridge for us to pull up any tech data on it. Open the door and look toward the ceiling of the fridge. But, from what you describe, it sounds like a thermister problem not a thermostat problem. A thermister is a small, temperature sensitive device that communicates with the computer to tell it what temperature its' location is at any given moment. The computer then adjusts air flow dampers, defrost cycles and cooling times accordingly. There can be many thermisters in any given refrigerator model line. These are inexpensive to purchase and easy to replace, but sometimes difficult to locate. They are usually hidden behind a small plastic shell, that looks completely unobtrusive. But they are easy to recognize for they have 2 white wires going into them that are tightly bonded together. To find them, you'll have to gut the fridge (food, shelves and all) and look closely. Focus your attention toward the area of the problem, the lower shelves/crispers. You may need to pull the rear panel out to find it, but when you do replace it. (UNPLUG YOUR FRIDGE FIRST!) Hope this gives you something to go on. If not, provide your full model number so we can assist further.

Is you refrig. cycling off and on?... sounds like a themostate if its NOT.. you might see if you have vents that have adjustments.. pull out the crispers and check for adjustable vents ... if there close them down some.

Thanks Solution Guy!
My exact model number is 596 73505200, Serial # is 10705880CL if that helps.
When you say gut the fridge to look for the thermister, do you mean just the fridge part not the freezer? I can probably move most of the fridge stuff to my grandmother's fridge but not what is in the freezer. It would of course, be easier the less we had to remove.
Dididsaythat - no, the fridge does not cycle on and off. I looked for adjustable vents. Didn't see any.
I might add that I think the crispers are only worse because they are lower. The lower shelves on the doors also freeze liquids.
The fridge is currently set to the lowest setting, "1" and the freezer is set to 1.5 almost the lowest setting.
