Janome Memory Craft 8000 Stepping Motor Error

My Janome Memory Craft 8000 is coming up with 'STEPPING MOTOR ERROR' when I turn it on and is making an awful grinding type noise that seems to be coming out of the arm where you secure the embrodery hoop. Is there any way to fix it as I have rung Janome and they have said no (think they just want me to buy the new one!!)

I have a Janome 4000 and am having problems. It keeps having a "step
motor" error. But it is intermitant... and when I take it to the shop,
it WILL NOT do it. They told me they can't fix it till it breaks
totally and they can duplicate the error. Talk about frustrating...

Has anyone else had this error and what part did your repairman change
    to FIX it???

I'm going to a retreat in April and am afraid that she will pull this
taking a HOLIDAY at her discression thing when we get there. :~(

Glad she works when she does... cauze I got quilts to make...!!! :~)

Your machine is one of the first big computer embroidery models (circa 1980s). It is over 25 model years old and while you MIGHt be able to find someone who still has a part and is willing to give it a try, It will continue to give you problems-like trying to use a 5 inch floppy disc in a computer-nothing works with them anymore! You have used this machine up-be GOOD to yourself and get an upgrade! E-bay is a good source for 'last year's model' Best of the Best machines.

Bear with me here...
When the Janome 8000 is turned on, one of the first things that it does is run the stepper motors to return the embroidery carriage back to its original position.
The computer in the Janome needs to know when the embroidery carriage is back in the correct position and to do so, it uses a sensor.
If the sensor fails, it does not know that the carriage is back in the correct position.
When the sensor fails, what happens is that the stepper motor keeps running even though the embroidery carriage is fully back, so what you hear is a horrible grinding sound. The grinding sound itself is nothing to worry about, actually it is good news, it means that the stepper motor is fine.
Janome in their infinite wisdom decided that whether the motor failed or the sensor failed, that they would simply say on the screen that the stepper motor failed.
I have repaired a machine with this problem, in my case it turned out that the sensor was okay, but someone had damaged the main circuit board, breaking the track from the sensor to the computer.
Unfortunately, I don't know if this sort of repair is something that the average repairman can take care of. I am an electronics engineer, so thats why it wasn't a problem for me.
I just thought some extra information on what is going on might give you a head start in getting some one to fix it for you.

I KNOW what your problem is because I and many other disappointed Janome owners have it. Your motherboard has kicked the bucket and it will cost you $400.00 to replace it. Go ahead and take it to your repairman, he will do the diagnostics and tell you the same thing. Problem is Janome won't help you out one iota. You, like I, will need to report them to the better business bureau.
Or try Ebay and get another, but beware, the best deals are the ones that also have a shot motherboard. Sorry....

I don't know whether this is a common issue, but I had the same problem. I purchased this machine as completely not working. After repairing 2 other problems I decided to check the sensor as suggested by John_nz and after short investigation it was clear that the connector on the PCB was loose on the other end! It is difficult to find after removal of side panel as the PCB is well hidden and most visible side connectors are not the ones you are looking for.
This wire is coming from the base is is attached to the socket on the far end of the board. It is VERY difficult to plug it it and I ended up removing the front panel with the PCB. It took about an hour to do that.
If you decide to trace the cable, you need to remove the base, by undoing 4 or 5 large screws and then find 2 sensors. Wires from both join and at the end you will find a plug. This is what you are looking for. It should be attached to the PCB.

My Janome memory craft 8000 will only sew backwards and the screen shows step motor error. the machine is 19 years old. Is this fixable?

step motor error may mean the embroidery arm is out of position gently push it back home towards the machine and see if this helps. If the mother board is gone, they will not be able to replace it as its so old, but you may be able to get an 8000 or 9000 on ebayso you can still use your discs if you don't want to get a new machine

I want to sell my 1991 New Home memory Craft 8000 sewing machine

A good place to see what machines are selling for is Ebay. That's where I sold a sewing machine and an embroidery machine.

It helps to know your product and machine embroidery lingo.

What are cassettes? Floppy disks? These make the machine borderline obsolete.

Memory cards are still around, but most EM now have USB connectivity or USB flash drives.

Satin thread? Embroidery machines use Rayon or Polyester embroidery thread.

Having had the machine recently serviced is also a plus.

if you ever have this problem, it is because you have had something in the way of the embroidery arm at the back of the machine, so it has not been able to move freely; you'll get a terrible noise as the machine is unable to do what it wants, slips gears or something and then can't bring the arm to its home position. But fear not, i have found if you turn the machine off and gently push the arm back home to touch the machine as it is the start position, when you turn it on, it will work fine and no harm done. just make sure the arm can move freely before you start embroidery!
