Question about KitchenAid KGYS850LT Gas Dryer

Kitchenaid Gas Dryer (Kgys850jq1) Flame shuts off after 3 mins

Hello,

My gas dryer starts up fine. When I watch the igniter work, it creates an orange flame that turns to blue and stays on for 3 minutes. (and the dryer is heating and tumbling). Then, it turns off and does not seem to come back on. Does anyone have an idea what might be the problem? I've cleaned all lint away and also in the vent. Thanks for your help.

The heating circuit is working perfectly except for the solenoid coils as indicated by the occasional glowing of the igniter but no gas is ignited. A gas valve closes as the solenoid coil weakens as it gets hot and does not open until it has cooled down. Replace both gas valve solenoid coils to get the dryer back into proper operation. The solenoid coils are part numbers 694539 and 694540 but also can be purchased as a kit here.

No you should replace the coils.

Why? You know you are getting power to the gas assembly so that means the fuse and control are functioning. The igniter glows so that is good. The Flame detect is fine because it shuts down the glowbar when it heats up. So those pesky coils get hot and quit. They eventually cool back down and work a little more, very aggervating to diagnose but easy to fix.

Note you do not have to remove the gas assembly to replace these coils.

replace the coils. i promise you. and here is a guide to most gas dryer problems that even a kid can see.

starts fine, cycles off, igniter comes on, hear a click, and no flame.-coils.
(can also be intermintent)

igniter stays on, no flame.-flame sensor

no glow from igniter.-igniter

remember, always allow about one minute for ignition.

Accessing the igniter on a Kitchenaid Dryer

Normal 0 Hi, UNPLUG the dryer. This model you need to remove the two screws under the lint screen. Now use a flat blade screw drive and insert it in the gap between the top and the front panel and pry the top up. Now locate and remove the screws on the inside of the front panel in upper corners. The front should lift off. You will see the ignitor attached to the burner. There is a harness you can unplug to test it. If the dryer is not heating at all, before you remove the front panel, you can remove the cap on the front lower panel and start the dryer. Look inside the holw and see if the ignitor glows at all.
If it glows and then shut down before the flame lights, you will need to change the coils on top the gas valve, not the ignitor.
If the ignitor does not glow at all, you will want to test the thermo fuse before the ignitor.
Normal 0 UNPLUG the dryer! Remove the rear panel of the dryer and locate the fuse. It is white and ¼” wide and 3” long. It is located on the blower housing. Remove the wires and check to see if it has continuity. If it does not, you need to replace it. I know this is a lot of info but these are most common problems.
