Epson gives you a miserable 12 ml of ink. Then it reports empty when there is still 10-15% of the ink left. I saw someone set up a brand new CX8400, print a single 4x6 photo and it said he was out of cyan. I use reusable cartridges from http://www.ccs-digital.com They hold 20 ml, which is 2/3 more ink. The chips automatically reset to full if you take the cartridge out and put it back in, so you get to use every drop. The ink is in a separate container inside the main cartridge. When it's really empty, you pop out the ink tank and pop in a new one. The tanks are under $3 each. I think this is brilliant because it's like refilling only it avoids the risks and mess of refills.

2. Select Maintenance and press OK
3. Select Nozzle Check and press OK
4. Press Start
5. Check the nozzle check pattern that prints to see if there are gaps in the lines
6. If there are no gaps, the print head is clean and you can continue printing If there are gaps or the pattern is faint, clean the print head
