I'll plug in a USB mouse which will work for a few minutes then freeze up. The touchpad still works but the mouse won't.

SOURCE: touchpad will not work

Hello, seems like a problem with the touchpad, first disable and enable the touchpad with the button which is located at the top of the touchpad, the corresponding LED should change from blue to orange and vice versa. If this doesn't solve the issue, reinstall the driver for the touchpad, you can find this by searching for 'recovery manager' in the start bar. Next step is to select 'advance options' and choose reïnstall hardware driver, there should be an option called 'Synaptics touchpad driver' select and install. kr Gijs

SOURCE: I bought Compaq Presario CQ56

a machine that new I would defiantly take it back and have it either fixed or replace, time is on your side i would take advantage of the manufacture warranty. i would also look on the keyboard see if there is a mouse locking feature, its normally the picture of a mouse on one of your function keys, press function and the key with the mouse icon on it and that may take care of it.

Well the best thing to do is to start testing your hardware, you could have a problem with your hard drive, or your ram, or your video card, or your usb ports or cable's. You can make diagnostic cd's easily by using these free downloadable utilities: This utility is a classic and works great for testing the ram in your computer. This is a seagate hard drive diagnostic utility that works on all types of hard drives to test that part of your computer. This is a video card testing bootable image.
If those pass, you can disable the usb ports on your computer from your bios potentially, and or crack open your computer and disconnect them if they are connected to the motherboard with cables :)

Toshiba touchpad doesnt respond after 2 minutes

This issue could be a few things. 1. Make sure your driver for the mouse and keyboard are updated. 2. The mouse pad may be going bad. 3. There may be an issue with the motherboard. I would recommend checking your driver first. Then replace the mouse pad. You can also pick up a wireless mouse and plug the usb that comes with it into a usb port if you are not comfortable tearing apart your laptop.

Built in mouse has not worked properly from day 1. Now my external mouse won't work either. I tried a different external moue, but it doesn't work either.

Unplug everything except the power cord, including the following:

USB devices
Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
USB flash drive or other external storage devices
External Monitor
External Keyboard
External Mouse
If your computer is attached to a docking station, undock it.

Make sure the touchpad or your finger has no dirt, grease, liquids or food on it (the touchpad has to make a good contact with your finger to work correctly).

Turn the computer back on and retest the touchpad.

When the touchpad still does not work correctly proceed to step 5.

When the touchpad does work correctly, attach one external device at a time and test the touchpad to see which one may have caused the issue.

Make sure the latest driver for the touchpad is installed (you may need to use a external USB or Bluetooth mouse), for more information refer to:

Asus 10065ha xp both touchpad and external mouse not working touchpad went first. then worked with external mouse. then only touchpad. now both not working.

Unplug your external mouse and restart your laptop. Check to see if the touchpad works, if it doesn't reinstall the driver. Unplug all other USB devices and plug your mouse back into a different USB port. It should be detected now. Cheers, Ravi Shanghavi

Touch pad quit working - locked

Check the mouse setup in control panel - many can be turned off but you have to use keyboard steps to get to the controls under mouse for the touchpad. You can also download a live CD like Ubuntu, burn to a Cd and boot from that and if the touchpad works in Ubuntu then it is the driver software in the off setting. If the Ubuntu or other OS live CD yields a dead touchpad then the touchpad itself has gone bad, or the connector on the motherboard has loosened, or the controller on the motherboard has failed. Troubleshooting the dead hardware will incur getting replacement hardware to isolate it - get a used touchpad or palmrest with touchpad included from a reseller on ebay or a place like that fits your model. It will involve disassembly to install.

One way to get to the mouse/touchpad settings is to hookup a regular USB mouse then boot so you wont have to use keyboard shortcuts. Check the settings, turn the touchpad on if it's set to off then disconnect the USB mouse and you should be good.

My logitech cordless mouse wont move from the middle of the screen. it wont scroll or click it is completely frozen. i am having to manouver with my keyboard right now and it is extremely difficult. i dont...

Lift your mouse and take a look at the bottom- is there a red light? I'm guessing there isn't, meaning the mouse is either broken or just not receiving power.

If it's a USB mouse you could just unplug it then plug into a different USB port. If it's a PS2 mouse (Round green connector) you'll have to unplug it, re-plug it, then reboot your computer and try again.

If these steps don't work, try borrowing someone else's mouse - if it works, then your mouse must be broken.

Mouse running away

Does this model have both the touchpad AND the little eraser-head pointer affixed in the keyboard?

If so, wiggle the eraserhead pointer thoughout its entire range of motion several times. Don't be afraid of it.

No eraserhead?

Your touchpad is defective. Replace, or disable it in the bios and use an external touchpad or optical mouse. Get one that has a USB plug.
