every time you open the freezer door , the cold air is dropped to the floor so the unit has to work hard to bring the temp back down same as any up right freezer
fridge --it is as efficient as the rest

The condenser coils are usually located under the refrigerator. They dissipate heat as refrigerant passes through them. If the condenser coils are dirty, they won't dissipate the heat effectively. As debris builds up on the coils, the refrigerator/freezer becomes less efficient, causing it to work harder to cool down. If the coils are significantly dirty, it will not be able to maintain the proper temperature. Check the condenser coils to determine if they are dirty. All models have coils in an enclosed area usually accessible via a vented cover at the back of the refrigerator. These coils help to keep the refrigerator and freezer cool. If these coils become too dirty from dust or other particles, the freezer may not work as efficiently.
unplug when taking the vent panel off to clean. bottle brush or a vacuum attachment be careful not to bend aluminium fins.

Make sure there is about 3 inches of clearance behind the fridge from the wall. Move the fridge away and check that the condenser coils are not covered heavily in dust. This can reduce the fridges efficiency.

You may also want to open and check the inside panel of the fridge to observe the evaporator coils and defrost tubes. If those tubes are burnt out (they are basically long light bulbs) you may get a build up of frost and ice that stops the flow of air thought the evaporator. This will cause the fridge to become warmer, up until complete failure.

as the fridge gets older the gas gets less efficient so regasing the unit may work, but, due to its age, you may find replacement more cost effective...and more efficient.

fist check the temperature of fridge,should be +2-+5c.
freezer should be between -18 to -20c.it is possible that you f/f was designed to operate between +10 to +35 degrees.most are, so as you say its in your garage/shed the ambient temp is too low for it to operate efficiently,hence fridge feels warm(compared to when it was indoors.mine is in shed with a greenhouse heater.kept at +9.....

If you have frozen coil at the back of the freezer section, then the defrost thermostat is usually failing. Allow the fridge to defrost completely overnight. If the fridge restarts cooling immediately after defrost, then the problem was the defrost system. In that case the fridge will stop cooling again in a couple of days, as soon as the evaporator coils restart freezing and the condenser goes under stress with the whole cooling system loosing efficiency.

Since the ice maker is erationally starting and stopping at it's own leisure.

1.We must first try to turn off the fridge.

2.unplug it or if you can not reach the plug you can turn off the breaker to the fridge also, for 5 minutes!
After this you restart the fridge and see if the system reset it self.
This is a common way to reset some units!

If nothing works then perhaps the ice maker needs to be replaced.

How old the fridge?
