Question about Apple iMac G5 Desktop

1 Answer

My Imac G5 has a long tone and flashing sleep light upon pressing the power button. It also no longer sleeps. When I put it to sleep it immediately shuts down and doesn't go through the normal shut down process.

Is this something I can change myself? or is this something I should have brought in and replaced?

  • mjear Jul 07, 2009

Yes, it starts up, and sometimes it does the thing with the fan blowing at max. :(

Thanks for attempting to solve my issue. It finally refused to boot! Long story short, I took it into the apple store...conduits blown on the motherboard...Computer is toast. :(.

is the imac starting up then you hear the boooop, then do the fans sound like they are blowing at max also? This might be because your internal battery the PRAM clock battery is failing or has failed. Thus you get the long tone and shut downs. you might want to get a new one.

The long tone and flashing light has to do with your firmware. If your mac boots up, you could try to download the latest firmware update and install it. But more than likely you will need to take this one into the shop.

Mac g5 wont start led light blinks once every 7 sec

Hold down the power button until the computer shuts off. The press the button to restart and see what happens. There are several different ways to startup. immediately upon hearing the boot tone, press and hold the shift key to boot in safemode. If this fails as well, then you will need to boot with the install CD. This is done by immediately pressing holding the C key upon powerup

Effect of sleep button

Hi a_hedges,

Sleep is a power-saving state that allows a computer to quickly resume full-power operation (typically within several seconds) when you want to start working again. Putting your computer into the sleep state is like pausing a DVD player-the computer immediately stops what it's doing and is ready to start again when you want to resume working.

When a computer is in Sleep mode, the power light is blinking and you get a blank screen like it's turned OFF.

On most computers, you can resume working by pressing your computer's power button. However, not all computers are the same. You might be able to wake your computer by pressing any key on the keyboard, clicking a mouse button, or opening the lid on a laptop. Check the documentation that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.

Hope this helps.

Power up IMac but screen blank, fan on, light on but no response

I have one doing exactly this at the moment. It had gone to sleep and the fans were going like crazy. I think it is a Motherboard failure (it happened with many G5 iMacs), this one has been replaced once already, and I can't actually get it to install anything. I'm taking it apart tomorrow to see what I can find inside. If I fond anything I'll let you know.

Hi, my G5 won't "sleep" either by a direct command or after its assigned wait period.

If you have aftermarket third party USB or Firewire devices plugged in it may not sleep correctly. Try unplugging non Apple stuff and restart if it sleeps you can narrow down whats causing it. Go into control panels and set sleep to like 1 min to test.

Why my MAC G5 turn off when the sleep mode is on

You may have your energy settings set to turn off the Mac after a specific time of inactivity. The power on / off option is in the Schedule button in the Energy Saver pane in system preferences under the Apple menu.

G5 has insomnia won't stay in the sleep mode

Usually this is caused by a USB printer unnecessarily clamoring for attention.
Disconnect ALL your USB devices and the problem ought to go away. Then connect them one by one to find out which the culprit is.
To zap PRAM, shut down the Mac, then push the start button and immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R until you hear the chimes pass by three times. But I don't think this will affect your problem.

Computer turns off unless constantly using... even put to sleep, it turns off instead.

Hi, Sorry you are having problems,
Sounds to me like either your energy saving preference pane is set WAY too short or it is corrupt.
Go to your system preferences and select (Energy Saver) and be sure it is set to never sleep and set the idle time to screen sleep time to about 30 minutes and be sure the button ( Shutdown instead of sleep ) is not selected... if you have that button.
Try these, then do a restart to be sure they take.
If you still have the same problem, then, your settings are corrupt, you will need to delete it:
go into your hard drive, into your user folder, into the library folder into the preferences folder and find this file:

put it in the trash, empty trash, restart the computer the reset your energy saver settings and you should be OK!
