Question about UPM Programmable Wall Switch Timer

1 Answer

What does a flashing "on" mean? The timer does not work as programmed.

I have 5 ESIC programmable timers. One works, 3 do not. THe one that works has a steady "On" showing on the home screen. The ones that do not have a flashing "on". I can find no explanation for this except to check the programming. Duh.........

I love the ending! It is an ESIC AX300.

If the units have battery, you may need to check and change them.. As long as the Wattage draw does not over power the timers, they should work well.

SOURCE: how do i program the

You did not specify UPM outdoor timer model.
1)ET525C has 7 buttons, and is shaped like a computer mouse, and has a photocell
2)DT420 & ET420 are dusk-to-dawn timers with clear plastic cover
3)DT523 is dusk-to-dawn and shaped like apple phone
4) PT555 is box-type with a door and timer has 6 screw terminals

I'm going to shoot-wild and offer programming for the one shaped like a mouse, the ET525c.
Here is manual
Download manual if you have high-speed, so you can see print larger.
Manual has 10 pages so I can't repeat everything. You will have to read along with your copy of manual.
1) Timer has MODE choices: I will help you program specific on-off times.
2) Setting the clock: Press SET > press Up-Down to choose day of the week ... if today's newspaper says Friday, set timer to Friday
3) Press Set again to confirm day of week
4) Press arrows to set hour. If your watch says 10:30 am, click arrow until 10 am shows
5) Press Set to confirm hour
6) Press arrow to set minutes, until minutes match your watch.
7) Press Set again to confirm everything.

Clock is displayed now

Programming timer:
Timer gives you 20 programs
PROG1 PROG2 etc to 20
Each program needs a DAY it will operate
Each program has ON time, and OFF time
PROG1 ON
PROG1 OFF
Select PROG1 using UP key
Manual page 6 has diagram showing how display looks
Press UP until PROG1 ON shows
Notice: PROG shows in upper right corner, and 1 ON displays to the right of time
This means PROG1 ON

Note: sometimes the instructions say press UP, and sometimes they say press UP or Down ... when in doubt, write out the instructions, and it helps you understand.

Now press Set to begin
Press UP and different days will show. MO for Monday, Weekdays, weekends.
Press Set to confirm days you want PROG1 to turn ON
Press UP or DOWN to set hour you want PROG1 to turn ON
Press Set to confirm hour
Press UP or DOWN to set minutes you want PROG1 to turn ON
Press Set to confirm hour

Half way done with PROG1, you need to set PROG1 OFF times

Press UP until PROG1 OFF shows
Look at display, and look at figure page 6 manual
To right of time is number 1 with tiny word OFF, in upper right corner of display is PROG

Press Set to start
Press arrows until day shows (default will flash same days you picked for ON times) Tip: keep the same days!!! or timer will reset ON times for some reason.
Press Set to confirm days timer will turn PROG1 OFF
Press UP and DOWN to set hour for PROG1 OFF
Press Set to confirm hour
Press UP and DOWN to set minutes for PROG1 OFF

To advance to PROG2, PROG3, PROG4-20, press UP key

To end programing mode, press DOWN
If no keys are touched for 1 minute, timer returns to clock mode

Instructions carry on with more options, if problems persist, take aspirin and post again in the morning.

So you choose between regular programming and countdown.
Countdown is for a bathroom fan for example.
Push the button and fan turns on for set amount of time.
After countdown is over, fan turns off automatically.

Q2) Yes all days of the week can be selected.
Set event 1 ON for all days.
Set event 1 OFF for all days.
Do not set more events unless you want more on-off events.

3) Programming steps: Press PROG button until Timer 1 ON appears on display Use Hour button to set 5 PM Use MIN button to set :00 Default selects ALL days (If you want other days, press DAY button until display shows correct block of days) Press PROG button again to save Program1 ON 4) Now for Program1 OFF 5) To set Program1 Off Press PROG button until Timer 1 OFF shows in display. My brinks 44-1020 digital timer was set up right and dose not work. i bought a new one and that one also dont work am i doing something wrong or is there a lil trick to it

1) I posted Brinks 44-1020 manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Brinks-44-1020-manual.pdf
Folks can order Brinks manuals from hamptonproducts.com

2) Manual shows phone number for defects 800-562-5625

3) I test timers, and some arrive defective, and people occasionally tell fixya they got 3 bad timers in a row. I tell them buy different model: for example buy quality timers at Lowes and Home Depot

4) Timer manuals have more words than allowed for free answer, but I suggest you write out steps shown in manual. Most timers have same basic steps so once you know how one timer works, all other timers work same way. This will eliminate human error as possible cause.

5) Here is a list of common problems with timers:
If plug-in timer doesn't work
a) Check receptacle for power
b) Check lamp is turned ON
c) Check bulb is good.
d) Check tabs or pins are set
e) Check override switch pushed fully in position
f) Try timer in different plug and with different lamp
g) Test circuit with inexpensive circuit analyzer from hardware
h) Don't exceed maximum wattage
i) Programmable: check for overlapping programs, and conflicting days.
j) Programmable: write out programming steps
k) Outdoor with photo cell > test with black tape over photo eye
l) Turn photo eye away from light source

My EJ351 programmable timer has work perfectly since 2004. A few days ago the red light just started to continuously flash. I turn it off to rest and regrogram but no luck, the indicator light still...

What is amazing is that you know the year of purchase, AND remember how to set the timer.

1) Try turning off circuit breaker and see if timer resets.
2) Buy cheap circuit analyzer and plug into outlet on same breaker and see if line is clean.
3) EJ351 has limited 1 year warranty.
I test timers: usually when in-wall timer goes bad, it needs to be replaced.
There are no repair parts.

Google search: Intermatic EJ351 timer
Amazon sells EJ351

Aplus supply sells Ej351 timer.
http://www.aplussupply.com/intermatic/timer.htm
I buy timers from both these suppliers.

The timer flashes, "no-op". Refuses to turn

no-op means 'no operation.

The manual says last resort to revive non-working timer is RESET timer.
This action will delete current day setting and all programming

Hold down ON/OFF and use paper clip to push in reset button for 2 seconds.
Release reset button but keep holding ON/OFF button down until INIT flashes on screen
Then release ON/OFF button and 12:00 should display.

At this point, timer can be re-programmed.
Simple step by step shows on following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html

If timer will not accept programs, or operate after RESET, then timer has gone bad.
ST01C comes with 1 year limited warranty.
Most in-wall timers have same limited warranty.

Replacing timer:
-Advantage of ST01C is timer does not need Neutral wire to operate, and wiring can be simple.
-If you are using ST01C for 3-way switching, then easiest thing is to replace with same timer.
-If you are using timer as astronomic dawn-dusk, then replacements include EJ500, Utilitec 0192773, Aube T1034, T1070, T1072, T1073.
-If you are using timer for 7-day operations then there are numerous options:

Suddenly the timer is not turning on the lights. The screen on the timer says "SOU". ????

Here is link to product manual at Intermatic. Manual shows troubleshooting, but doesn't show "SOU"

ST01C works on a 3-way circuit > If another switch is involved, or if switch or timer are not grounded properly, it might affect timer. Troubleshoot says disconnect red wire from 3-way circuit, and see if problem continues, and then suggests replacing timer.

Manual says if CR2 batteries are weak, then BATT shows on screen. Also says weak batteries will cause circuit not to work.
Check the CR2 batteries: Timer holds programming while you replace batteries and clean terminals.

ST01C programmable timer works on circuits up to 100 feet >> I assume because it's battery operated >> electrical interference affects the circuit because troubleshoot lists 'buried wire' as cause of failure. I guess nearby electrical devices could affect performance of timer.

Timer is rated for 15 amps which means practical maximum of 12 amps >>> so 120 volts x 12 A = 1440 watts max or 14-100 watt bulbs >> if you are running more watts, or running close to maximum, or if timer gets warm during operation, this would shorten lifespan simply by heat affecting the circuit.

Interesting that the EI600, EJ500 & ST01C battery-operated timers each has troubleshoot section in manual >>> implying these timers are problematic. ST01C has limited 1 year warranty. EI600 has limited 5 year warranty.

ST01C has 40 on-off programs per week.

If 7 on-off events per week can do the job, you can switch to the EI500 [click on EI500 to access manual]
http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/in-wall%20timers/digital%207-day%20time%20switches.aspx
>>> the manual shows no troubleshooting section. The EI500 requires connection to neutral or white wire, since the timer runs on electricity instead of battery

[you can use ground wire instead of neutral]

http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-st01c.pdf

1) Manual shows troubleshooting steps. Since ST01C is battery operated, it will not work on loads farther than 100 feet away. If a wire is buried underground, this can interfere with operation. Other electrical devices can interfere with operation. Check for interference issues.

2) Try reprogramming timer
To program the ST01C:
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html

3) ST01C has 1 year warranty + troubleshooting steps in manual, implying short life expectancy. Similar EJ500 has troubleshooting + 1 year warranty. Similar Intermatic EI600 battery-powered has troubleshooting + 5 year warranty. Each offers 40 programs per week.

3) Other in-wall programmable timers offer 7 on and 7 off events per week. Clock operates on 120V instead of battery. Ttroubleshooting is: reprogram.
