SOURCE: Stuck at IBM Thinkpad Splash Screen

Sound like a memory chip has failed. Try removing the memory, I believe these have on board, but not sure. If it doesn't have on board, you will need at least one chip in. If the problem is still there, try removing the CD drive, occasionally they can cause a no start. If it's not the memory or the CD drive, then try a bios flash. You will need to create a bootable disc from IBM's support site using a different machine (obviously).
If the bios flash doesn't fix it, them the problem will lie with the motherboard.

SOURCE: My ibm thinkpad r51 is not starting up just

It appears the hard drive is faulty.
Does the hard disk LED flash when the laptop boots up?
Go into the BIOS configuration and see it the hard drive is detected, (then Startup - Boot - and look at IDE HDD0 it should list the make and model of the hard drive).
If the hard disk is detected it still could be faulty. To test the hard drive, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port.
If the computer sees this as an external hard drive and you can open the various folders and files then the hard drive is OK and the fault could be the disk controller on the laptop's motherboard.
If the hard disk is not detected the it is faulty and you need to replace the hard drive in the laptop and install Windows etc. to get it working again.

SOURCE: laptop got stuck in a black screen with cursor

Try following method to get rid of Black screen problem. 1) TAKE OUT YOUR LAPTOP BATTERY
2) REMOVE YOUR AC ADAPTOR CORD, that's the wall power, remove it.
3) NOW HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 SECONDS

That will drain any static electricity that has built up on your laptop system board.

I have a ibm thinkpad r51 but when i turn it on it will load to somewords and il say media test failure check cable exiting intel boot agent then it will jut stay there

It's trying to boot from a LAN or Network. You want it to boot from your hard drive.

Temporary Fix that you will have to change each time you turn on the laptop:
Notice the screen when you press the power button, at some point it will tell you the keys to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup and the key to hit to Change the Boot Order. Hit the key to Change the Boot Order and select the Hard Drive

Permanent Fix
Notice the screen when it boots up and press the key that allows you to get into the BIOS or System Setup. Tab over to the area that allows you to set the Boot Sequence. Set your Hard Drive as the 1st Boot.
The best boot sequence is:
1. CD/DvD Drive First (Just make sure nothing is in the drive when you boot)
2. Hard Drive 2nd

Have an IBM ThinkPad T30 2366 Notebook. Windows boots up. I do the normal Ctrl-Alt-Del and then presented with Windows login screen. My problem is that 1 letter on each row of the keyboard does not work...

Hi there.
Keyboards tend to do this from time to time, and is quite common.
You can use a USB keyboard to access your PC until you have a replacement keyboard for the laptop.
If the USB keyboard is not recognized hit F2 (on start up), enter the bios and set it to defaults, save the changes and exit, the computer will restart and you should be able to use a USB keyboard to access your account.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

How can I boot from USB in a Thinkpad T22?

I assume with "boot menu" you mean the BIOS boot menu (the one you get to if you press F12 during start up, before the Windows screen appears.)
  1. Go to "Enter Setup"
  2. Go to "Config", click "Enter"
  3. Go down to "USB", click "Enter"
  4. Make sure that "USB Bios Support" is enabled.
  5. (Hit "Enter" again and choose between "enabled" and "disabled")
  6. Hit "Esc" twice to go back to the main page.
  7. Go down to "Startup", click "Enter"
  8. Choose "Boot"
  9. Check if "USB CD" is in the list of boot options or excluded form booting.
  10. Hit F10, confirm any changes you made (click "Enter" for 'yes') and reboot.
  11. Tap or hold down F12 again and you should see the boot option menu again.

Note: I am not 100% sure if you can boot from a DVD externally.
I booted from the internal DVD drive fine with a Linux LiveCD. It is possible that the T22 BIOS does not support external booting. Check you version - the latest release from IBM is version 16ET32WW (1.12), release date 06/03/2004. You find that info here.

I would really appreciate if you could come back here and leave a comment, so I (and maybe others?) can learn form this ;-)

Good luck!

1) This is a typical problem when the CMOS battery is very weak or dead, it will continually display the date and time and reboot with the same errors until you change the CMOS battery. On this model it is behind the door that houses the memory chip, above the battery, if you have the laptop turned over and battery closest to you. <--best bet, its a dead CMOS battery.

2) You can get to the BIOS to run tests, one of 2 ways, either hit the ESC key and other keys to get a 301 error or hold the F1 key and boot, you should get into BIOS. (You probably won't be able to do this until you replace the CMOS battery.) From there you can run diagnostic tests on various components.

3) Lastly, you can update the BIOS. From inside the EASY-SETUP bios you should be able to copy the BIOS part number, date, etc. Look for the BIOS update based upon model # either thru a search on the web or directly on the IBM website (a search on google of "bios update thinkpad 380ed" will bring up a link for the IBM page.) If you choose to do a BIOS update, read the directions carefully and remember not to power off the machine while the update is happening. If you've never updated a BIOS before, get someone who has to walk you thru it before attempting it by yourself.

GOOD LUCK :)
