Tried everything I can think of including all menus as well as contacting Hitachi.

Not sure I understand the question. Do mean saving audio settings? If you're talking about settings, they should save automatically or ask you to save changes before exiting the setup menu.

Testimonial: "I set the volume at say, 20, turn off the set. Next time I turn it on the volume is back to zero."

Sounds like a setting in the sound or audio section of your setup menu that causes it. Check your settings and adjust them accordingly. That should do the trick.

Where is MTS button located? On TV or remote? Hitachi 42HDT52A

It's not on the remote. It's in the Menus on the TV.

Go in to the Audio Menu, and scroll down to Audio Sources. This will allow you to change between Mono, Stereo and SAP.

Blurry Picture

I know these models came out around 2001, and I'm afraid that the problem sounds like it is related to the bulb going bad.

This article outlines how many TVs from around the turn of the century have had similar problems to yours.

I know bulb replacement is an option. You may want to call around to TV repair shops and see what your options are. In the end, though, it may be time to start saving up for a new TV.

Solution:
Your TV has a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in but stationary.
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from www.TvRepairKits.com.
They have put together a kit for the Hitachi TV sets.
The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc.
Everything you need to fix it yourself. Its a fairly easy fix on the Hitachi sets.

I have a Hitachi Plasma TV model 55HDS69 that recently went black while being watched. I turned the main power off and unpluged it overnight and tried turning it back on, but only the red standby light...

Do it again, only this time unplug any video and audio inputs and outputs, unplug it from any power source, and leave it sit overnight.

I had the same problem with my Hitachi. I called a local repair shop and he said to unplug it for 10 minutes and start it again. That didn't work so I got it ready to take to the shop. I disconnected everything. The next morning I decided to check it one more time so I reconnected everything. It worked just as it had before.

I hope it works for you.
