Incorrectly adjusted door catch. They have movement on them to allow a tight seal due to the microwave capability.

I just found the specs and instructions on it.

You must close the door hard or it will not start

The locking mechanism is not closing completely unless you slam the door because the plastic parts don't slide easily after a couple of years. We found that putting a small amount of vegetable oil on the 2 locking hooks in the door will allow the components to slide easily and close properly so the machine will function correctly.

Door will not close without slamming

Possible causes - door switch, or door switch assembly out of adjustment; plastic latch guides on door switches worn; door hinge worn, causing door to be out of alignment. If it's the last one, the unit needs to be checked for microwave radiation.

My whirlpool microwave MH1170XSS-2 closes and latches just fine, but all of a sudden it stopped sensing the door is closed. the light stays on and it won't run, running a "close door" message.

By the sound of your description of the problem, it sounds like the door is closing and latching closed OK. This rules out a door latch return spring issue. I think it is a door sensing switch problem, either the switch contacts are not going to zero ohms (they can get a slight grease film build up on them [even in the box- brand new] and show 5 ohms or more) or the switch body is not in proper position, sometimes the switch mounting posts can break if the door gets closed too hard (slammed). It could also be a wiring problem to the control board or a board problem itself but this is the least likely cause. It is also possible that a latch head can get broken off or cracked and is just not noticed..You need an ohm meter to diagnose the switch's electrical condition. Please be sure to unplug the unit from the wall before doing any disassembly.

Our panasonic inverter microwave (3 years old) needs repeated hard slams to shut the door so that the light goes off and the microwave will work. How do we fix this problem as I'm afraid we are going to...

We have a Panasonic Inverter microwave. Door became difficult to close and had to slam it hard while holding themicrowave to keep it from moving. When opening the door did not pop open but did unlatch. I ordered a new door lever from Panasonic. When got part I removed case from microwave and lever was okay. I then removed the perimeter strip on the inside of the door. With a screwdriver I stretched the spring at the bottom that keeps the door latches pulled downward. Spring still worked just not as stiff. Put perimeter piece back on the door and replaced housing (which I didn't need to remove in the first place), and then put a small drop of vegetable oil on the cams where the door latches hit when closing door. Viola, door opens and closed as new. Problem solved. Diagnosis: over time the latch tension spring hardens and gets too stiff. P.S.: I had several similar springs as backup in case I screwed up the original one.

To cure this error, replace the door switches and realign the door, checking the door closers for contact and correct clearance. The usual cause of this problem is slamming the door or contamination of the switches.
Very nice reliable machines.

Cook Light Stays On and Microwave doesn't work

You're close.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If you think the problem is on the control panel,
we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases in about a week or so.

I close the door of my microwave and the light stays on and the turn table rotates slowly. with a few slams it works again but there is obviously a fault.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or occasionally a misaligned door.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

You can probably find exploded views and order parts by entering your model number here at the Sears parts site. The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.

GE Profile Spacemaker Microwave

Absolutely. That's why they make shop bulbs to use in one's portable garage work light and garage door opener.

Slamming the door of a microwave is never good idea!

Another factor is touching the new bulb with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.
