Question about Ruud Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Ruud Silhouette II plus LXE that the hsi is energizing when the thermostat is in the off position. We have not used the heat in months only the A/C.

If the inducer motor is not turning on, it is not getting a call for heat and the hsi should not be energized. If it is energized without a call for heat, then the circuit board will need to be replace in the furnace...it has stuck contacts on the hsi relay.

SOURCE: Heater won't turn on even with a good HSI

Remove at least one of the wires going to that solenoid on the gas valve. Check for continuity between the 2 legs of the solenoid. If you cannot get a reading then you have a bad valve. If you indeed do have continuity start the furnace and see if voltage is going to the valve. If you have no voltage going to the valve then you could have a bad board. If voltage is going to the valve then the gas valve has failed internally or you ain't paid the gas bill. LOL.

I am installing an Emerson programmable thermostat. We have a Ruud furnace achiever 90 plus that was installed 14 years ago. The thermostat mentions a power stealing switch.

The Ruud furnace is probably compatible. Power stealing is a way to recharge the thermostat battery from the 24vac control voltage used to operate the furnace. If you install the Thermostat in the "separate power supply mode" it does not need to power steal ever and will be much more reliable. Some thermostats don't get enough power in the power steal mode to keep the battery reliably recharged, especially during the cold winter months because the poiwer available to "power steal" is highest when the furnace is NOT running. You will need a separate 24 vac transformer and some wire.

I have a RUUD Silhouette II and every once in a while the house gets cold and I check my furnace and the Status Light blinks-pauses-blinks-pauses ect. It is only flashes once so it tells me ''One Hour Time...

You will need to reset the furnace and have it run thru a cycle (or try). After three attempts, it will blink another error code that may tell you more.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Ruud Silhouette II Gas Furnace, the furnace lights but will only stay on for a few seconds?? What could be the problem??

Bad or dirty flame rod.

Gas furnace, main burner ignites the other 2 don't. then shutdn.

Between the burners is a small rail in the pressed steel where the flame runs across to light the other burners and it sounds like there is dirt or debris in the step over rails causing the problem. You will need to use some compressed air on those rails to clear them out. Once the rails are clear the other two burners should ignite right away.

Wiring Diagram for Ruud Heat Pump

Unfortunately, the wiring diagrams for heat pumps are not so easy to come up with. The outdoor unit will have its own diagram, but may not include the indoor air handler and will probably not include the thermostat. That said, the orange wire is commonly run from the thermostat to the reversing valve in the outdoor unit. This wire is usually not connected to the indoor airhandler. The orange wire is usually used in a unit that has the reversing valve energized in cool. Ruud, however has its reversing valve energized in heat. Probably not useful but maybe helpful
