Question about Vizio Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a vizio E5501-B2 tv that has sound, but no picture.

I ordered a new power board that arrived today and put it on and now the tv won't power up. I took out the new power board and put the old one back on and the tv powers up. What could be the problem?

If the TV goes in standby, then it is in protection mode.

Ensure also that the fault is not coming from a faulty receiver box sending
bad signal, check if you get same problem on DVD with no receiver box
connected.

Try first leaving the TV power cord unplugged for some times, let say one hour or so.

The flashing light indicates a diagnostic state called protection.
When the TV goes on protection there are only two possible causes.

1The internal circuits are jammed because of electrostatic charges accumulating on capacitors, or because of a wrong voltage read by the main chip on your monitor controller board. this started the protection circuit.

2 The protection circuit detected a wrong voltage or abroken contact, identified an internal fault and kicked in , starting the flashing light.

If you are in situation one, then the TV will reset just unplugging power cord for one or two hours, sometimes even minutes.

If you are in situation 2 , then there is an internal fault.

If under warranty contact the manufacturer ringing the number on the user manual

On LCD Pay particular attention at inverter and power board, power board can be inspected looking for bulged or leaking capacitors, then tested with a multimeter. The inverter is more difficult to test , there is need to read voltages, should be done by a tech. Also the LCD controller board can cause same problem

SOURCE: No Sound, No Picture

I had the same issue on my Vizio and fortunately it was still covered by the Costco extended warranty from where I purchased my tv. The service tech came out yesterday with a power supply and main board which is what I understand is usually the issue with your and my symptoms. He replaced both boards although he felt the issue was in the main board 3647-0072-0150 and not the power supply. Tv is working just fine now and actually may be even a little clearer after the board switch. I understand you can purchase the boards and from what I've seen the tech do, it is no more difficult to replace than if you were building a computer if you are comfortable with that. The most time consuming part of the repair was removing and replacing the screws.

this could be one of two problem. first, check if you have back light. If you do then the problem is with the M/B. Second, if you don't have back light then the inverter is bad and needs to be replace.

sounds like you needed to replace your video fuse before anything normally if you have video but no sound its an audio fuse and vica versa if for some reason both were out I would say your in need of a new power supply I would suggest replacing the fuse and if it still does not work contacting a service tech to run a diagnostic to see what exact part or maintenance you need

SOURCE: VIZIO GV42LHDTV Got TV after

Hi.

If the TV does not start with the new audio board, and if it does start with the old one, then the audio board that you recently purchased is defective.

About the board : 0500-0507-0230; that is the power board (PSU). If you could see the Vizio logo, that means that TV started, and that the power board was OK without need for testing. When the power board is defective, either the TV does not give any sign of life, or the TV goes in standby mode from start and does not wake up. In that case the led stays blinking to warn you that there is an incorrect voltage from PSU.

If the TV is freezing with Vizio logo, that means that at most the faulty part is the main board.

Also, you say that there is no backlight. No backlight means that the screen is completely dark. If there is no backlight you won't be able to see the logo or any other picture. If there is no backlight, then the problem is usually the inverter.

Here a brief article summarizing how to test PSU and inverter: How to test an LCD TV.

Here all parts for this model:GV42LHDTV.

Regard.

Ginko.

Back - light problem. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ To some model sets; especially LED back-lighted types; the back-light inverter circuit will be part of the main power supply board [SMPS]. In such cases, the power supply board might need replacement. To some models sets, the back-light inverter and SMPS section circuit will be integrated at its main board itself. If so; the main board should be replaced. To some models of sets, all these section circuit will be integrated at its main board. If this is the case, you have to replace the main board.

Aritha Erwin sorry to hear of your VIZIO trouble!

I realized I am writing you from YESTERDAY... USA:
(just now SUNSET... SF Bay Area)...

https://www.bing.com/search?q=Vizio+E550i-B2+power+board+ebay&qs=n&form=QBRE&pq=vizio+e550i-b2+power+board+ebay&sc=0-27&sp=-1&sk=&cvid=6BED13AE342142B8B63EAC51E7FA274D

These parts references might not mean much (on the other-side of the date-line... but there are plenty of useful videos

I'd bet money we are talking a capacitor on your power board... I'm personally addicted to Samsung... but they all
get their (crummy gum wrapper capacitors cheap bin).

but hey (watch videos... learn... and SAVE $100s).

You must verify your own circuit board numbers.

I'm a three time winner of the cheesy Samsung Capacitor award
(NOT REAL... But should be).

~~

What sound reception means is your set is working (in large part)... 'cept for the picture part.

Before I make ANY recommendations... I can say I have had two careers in (industrial-grade) electronics... If only to get your close attention to two VERY stern recommendations (more like commandments):

Always wear (ESD) anti-static wrist strap ($6, see below) when handling "electronics" you value (a small static spark can burn right through one of those BIG UGLY Diodes in your vehicles alternator).

I DO NOT recommend live power work... the boards are simply to cheap... it s an iterative process... So you guess wrong: put away that "good spare" (so labeled) and order other board...

For a BIG failure like yours...
FIRST LIKELY CANDIDATE = POWER BOARD.

If you MUST (I generally recommend against it) take live voltage readings... DO SO with one hand in your pocket... A two handed EMBRACE of even a SMALL amount of electricity... can be catastrophic (professionals power off and/or use insulated gear...
shoes, gloves (no rings, no watches))...

and only using a QUALITY volt-ohm-meter (VOM, Like a FLUKE, 101 BASIC, again... see below).

You DO NOT want to earn the nick-name "SPARKY"... trust me!

Now all you need to know... is to track where every scr3w ( "ski-rue" )comes from (easily done with a drawing & awl on a piece of cardboard... Take picture BEFORE you remove ANYTHING...

Force NOTHING (SOME CABLES have clever little releases)...

and

Put EVERY WIRE EXACTLY WHERE YOU FOUND IT... You will be proud. Everybody has to start someplace... This might just be your place...

~~

ELSE... (house-call):

Sears DOES guarantee (so to speak) their SAMSONITE Gorilla won't break much... but so did Circuit City before they evaporated (I'm just saying (out-of-business)).

Sears has boards for sale, shopjimmy.com has them... of course eBay & Amazon...

Take a look at TAMPATEC ... Smart young-fellow... breaks less than he fixes... (BEST: he admits when he SPARK'd a circuit board (kudos).

Modern TVs are pretty simple... but I only guarantee: If you go in carelessly you will turn a slight mal-function into a MAJOR CATASTROPHIE... Have no doubt!

Good luck...
