I have an old Zenith SY2568S that hasn't had a crisp picture in a while and has just recently developed a translucent white picture. Everything else seems to be fine. Can I fix this on my own or should I...

This is caused by a device on the television called the "flyback". It is the most dangerous part on the TV and should be set by a trained technician. What is occurring is the flyback is going in and out of it's correct setting by the device that sets the voltage output of it. It is called the Focus Foyer or similar flyback control. Take it to a technician. Have him give you an estimate - I usually set the cost of repair to 50% of the original cost of the unit - beyond that it would be cost INeffective. Hope this helps

When you have the back off, look for the flyback (high voltage) transformer. This is the part that has the thick red wire protruding from its top which attaches to the top of the picture tube with a suction cup. On the flyback there are 2 controls, the bottom one is screen and the top one is focus. Turn the bottom control (screen) down (counterclockwise) until the white lines go away and the brightness looks normal. Then turn the top control (focus) until the picture is nice and sharp. If the F connector has been pulled out and the TV has RCA (red, white, yellow) jacks, use those jacks and set the TV to INPUT.

Everything red is on fire with an ugly pink shadow!!

Todd, The fault could be in the red video amplifier circuit, and would require either a service sheet with voltages to measure, or an oscilloscope to observe waveforms and levels. It may just be faulty, noisy preset potentiometers on the circuit board, used to adjust various parameters of the colour system. If you are confident then go ahead and check these circuits. Another cause could be a fault in the CRT (cathode ray tube), or the magnets used for alignment. These require skilled knowkedge of what they do and one may have shifted.
