Hi there SmartAlec from here. Sounds like you have a brush roller bearing or bearings problem. Undo the base plate off your dyson vacuum cleaner and remove the brush it will be toughto slide it out but can be done. Hold it in your hands and see if it turns freely if not you can try and remove the end caps (bits on end of brush) and clean it out with an air compressor or small brush.Put the caps back on and retest. If its greatly improved excellent refit and vacuum. If its not freely spining it will have to have new bearings or replace the brush complete ads they are not very dear. I can supply a brush for you to buy if you are not near a parts shop. hope this helps regards SmartAlec.
Happy Vacuuming :)

Vacuum Brush Bar Not Spinning

" My vacuum brush is not spinning". OR
" My vacuum brush is spinning but not picking up".
" My dirt sensor doesn't work, continually blinks".

These three things are very common in vacuum cleaners and they are nothing serious. There is a rubber belt that drives the Brush Bar.You simply need to replace the belt.

* If the Brush Bar is not spinning, then you know that the belt is broken.
* If the Brush Bar is spinning but not picking up anything, then the belt is stretched to the point where it is now spinning on the Brush Bar. When this is the case, you may smell the belt burning and you may even see a little smoke.
* And, if the you have a dirt sensor on you vacuum and it continually blinks, this is due to a bad belt as well.

Whatever the case, the belt must be replaced. Belts are very easy to replace. In most vacuums, you turn the vacuum over and pop off the bottom to access the belt. In some other vacuums, there will be a little door/cover that pops off on the top side of the vacuum; allowing access that way.

You can pick a belt up at your large department stores or Do-It-Yourself Centers. These stores usually only carry specific brands, depending on each store you search. You may want to call around first. The belts are very reasonably priced for the most part.

Or, if you would rather shop on line, here is a link to belts. Just look up the Make and Model # of your vacuum and order.

Good Luck!

Because the brush roller is not rotating, the motor shaft is spinning in one spot on the belt and eventually will burn the belt and cause it to break. You need to remove the brush roller and its end caps to remove pet hair or other matter. You may have to replace the burned belt to get things working right again.

Why Dyson dc39 brush bar won't spin

Remove brush bar the belt broken, cut or stretched to the point of being ineffective? Is the brush bar full of hair or string?
Pull the belt forward...does the pulley spin? Turn the cleaner on
and see if the pulley spins...if it does I think a new belt will be needed.
Be sure to buy the right one.

Why beter bar dosent spin while in the vaccum mode only in up right position ?

Hello! The air pressure from the motor is most likely spinning the brushes in the upright position. This vacuum has a brush-roll on/off pedal located on the left side of the cleaner. To activate the brushes, power the vacuum on, recline the handle and then press the brush-roll on/off pedal. The brushes should begin to spin. If they do not the belt may need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

My dyson 33 's roller brush will not spin belt is in tact,i have suction with the hose and hand tools, just not when i am using vacuum reg

Hi Edna,

I am sorry to hear your brush bar is not spinning. If your brush bar is clear of all debris, it may be necessary to reset your brush bar. In order to do this please ensure your machine is turned off and unplugged. With your machine in the upright position please rotate the selector knob between the bare floor and carpet setting ten times, ultimately leaving it in the carpet setting. Please proceed to plug your machine in and power it on to determine if the problem is resolved.

If the issue persists please call our Helpline to speak with an expert:

Best wishes,

The brush bar will not spin. The belts melt when I turn it on and the belt drive is hot to touch with smoke coming out.

The belt is rubbing the foot plate.Check to see if the foot plate is damaged.Allso check the bearings in the brush bar are free and spin without the belt on.If you cant spin the brush bar by hand with the belt not attached then your bearings are seized.Get a new brush bar

Eats belts immediately

HI There,

Usually when the belt breaks immediately, this indicates that your roller brush has gone bad and needs to be replaced. I have never seen the motor shaft being damaged and causing belts to break before. When the roller brush can't spin because it's bearings have worn out, the motor shaft continues to try and turn the belt, but since the belt can't spin the motor shaft at that point burns right through the belt.

To make sure that it's your roller brush, remove the brush from the vacuum cleaner, and hold it using just your two pointer finger tips, holding just the bearings caps at the end of the bar, and not the bar itself.

Try to spin the brush using your thumbs. Does the brush spin freely without resistance? It should spin completely around 3-4 times on each spin. If it doesn't spin, then your bar is bad.

If the brush doesn spin, and it continues to break belts, this means that the belt is being installed incorrectly, and is being pinched by the roller brush. Pull the belt forwards after installing to make sure the brush spins freely.

Hope this helped you,

Chris Jones

Brush won't turn

Even though the belt is still in tact, that doesn't mean that it is still good. The belt needs to be replaced with a new one because it is stretched. It is probably slipping on the beater bar.
