Are these black or blank lines?

I just successfully fixed my TI which had about half of the horizontal lines completely dead. I opened the calculator and used hot air gun to carefully warm the connection between the black ribbon cable and the board behind the LCD. All the bad connections were between the board and the black folded ribbon cable.

After warming it up I used a blunt small plastic object to glue the ribbon back to the board. The purpose of the hot air is to melt the glue.. The connection in question is hard to access because it is between the fold so you have to remove some of the black tape before you can stick something between the folds and access the connection.

Good luck :)

My ti-86 screen is black is that normal. I have not used it in years, but i put fresh batteries

Hello, First of all no; it is not normal for your screen to be black. How can you enjoy the wonderfulness that is Ti with a dark screen. For the solution; it sounds like your contrast needs to be adjusted. Hold 2nd and down. The screen should lighten. If it reaches about where you can not see the cursor, then press 2nd and up and this will darken it. Hope this helps; Happy Calculating

My screen is black after putting in new batteries in my TI-86

Adjust the contrast. Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2nd key. Press and hold the down-arrow key until the screen lightens. If you go too far, repeat the process using the up-arrow key instead of the down-arrow.

I just changed the batteries and the screen is black when i turn it on if its in direct light i can see what i am typing..

I had the same problem as this. This is because when you might have changed the contrast on your calculator when your old batteries were running low and you need to reset the contrast. Here is what you do:

press the orange "2nd" button, then press the "down arrow" button, then the orange "2nd" button, then the "down arrow". do not press the buttons at the same time only one after the other and KEEP GOING. The screen will eventually lighten up and you are all set.

My TI-86 has a completely black background, please let me know how to fix it. thanks

After changing the batteries the calculator is restored to factory defaults, but the screen contrast may change. In your case (even if you did not just change batteries) the screen may be too dark. Lighten it a bit.
Press [2nd] key and release it.
Press and hold [DownArrow] until screen is light enough.

Hope it helps.
Thank You for using FixYa and for rating the solution.
