Incompatible disk message

I get a message that reads incompatible disc change disc when I use the direct connect from camera to burner. When I try to use the PC to burner it tells me there's a problem with the device? Is my burner no longer any good? It's been used one time and I've only had it about 1 1/2 years????? Please help thank you

I have had the same problem on two brand new CU-VD20 recorders. On Wednesday I finally on got through to "customer service"...what a joke that is...and they wanted me to send the first one to be repaired. I took it back to Best Buy. They were great and gave me a second unit immediately. It does exactly the same thing as the first unit.

I have been trying all evening to get through to "customer service" again. I have been as high as 10th in the queue, and got all the way down to 4th before I was disconnected. Got back on the phone, started 6th and was disconnected within 10 minutes when I was 3rd in the queue. For the last hour I keep getting a message, "your call cannot be completed at this time........."

This really worries me that if the tech support can't even make their phones work, how the hell are they supposed to make their products work.

I'm not sure I'll ever buy another JVC product. Right now, I doubt it!

I also have a JVC Share Station. We bought it when we got our camcorder, but did not use it until a year later when we were running out of space. So it was brand new and it kept on saying wrong disc, or incompatible disc. We finally got a hold of customer service and they said to try a different disc, so we went out and bought about 10 differnt kinds and none of them worked. There is obviously something wrong with the product itself if numerous people are having the same problem. I even went to the store and bought another one, just to compare, and it did the same thing. The store will no longer take it back since so much time as gone by now and JVC does not seem to concerned that they are having so many problems with it, they made us feel as if we were the only ones having the problem, now that I am seeing this online, I know that we are not alone. Now we feel like were stuck with a $200 burner that does not work, and countless hours of trying to get it to work!! If anyone has any luck with JVC, please let us know as I would love to resolve this!!

Same problem. I used the burner to create some DVD's about 10 months ago. It worked fine. Now I am trying to make some DVD's for the grandparents, and it reads incompatible disk. But I am using the same brand that worked before. I went out and bought some new disks, and still reads incompatible. What is the deal???

  • Lucky John Jan 07, 2008

Exactly the same problem as described by KIMSY. I went to the store where I bought it and we tried burning a video using a JVC DVD version 1.1/2x and it worked. It seems that the "version" of the DVD is important. It has to do with the compatibility between the speed of the burner and the speed at which the DVD can be processed. Anyway, it appears that for a DVD the 1.1/2x version is outdated by today's standards. I tried to find DVDs complaint with this version without success. The best I ran into were version 1.3 DVDs which I haven't tried out yet. You have to look into the "small print" on the box to find out about this "version" thing.

It is quite obvious that this product is a NO NO. 200$ for nothing. Not good for JVC's reputation.

Same as everyone else, unfortunately.  "Incompatible disk"  Now what?

  • Anonymous Feb 13, 2008

same problem, used maybe 10 times in a year then started receiving incompatible disk messages, tried different disks, nothing working...have tried contacting jvc,no help, they suggested sending unit in...has anybody had any success after receiving this message...did they ever get it working again?

My JVC burner worked great for a few months, then I noticed that it had one "incompatable disc" message in November. Now it has the same message for every disc I put in it and it appears to be broken. In the past I used 4x disc and they were Verbatim DVD-R. Does JVC stand for "Junk Video Company"?

  • Anonymous Feb 21, 2008

I got the same "incompatible disk" error that is see mentioned here. The unit was heavily discounted when bought it at Best Buy $39.99 (had been $200.00). I suspect that JVC and Best Buy realize that they have a lemon in this product. The unit came with a DVD (which did not work). I plan to return it to the store.

I get the same message whether I use JVC DVD-R 1-8x disks, Memorex DVD+R 4x, or Philips DVE-R 1-16x speed disks. It seems the only solution to this problem is to kiss the $200 bucks good bye and purchase a Sony camera and burner! It sure is disappointing to think that JVC will do nothing to rectify a poorly designed piece of equipment. The State's Attorney in our state is interested in this kind of news.

I have used this burner before with the same disks and now it says that there is a problem with the disk and it will not burn anything. Connected from camera to burner. I am using a DVD-R disk

  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2008

I am having the exact same problem. A free disk was provided with the burner, and I used it and it worked. I have purchased that exact same disk (brand, speed, etc.), and I am getting the "incompatible diks message".

I used my share station about 10 times, and then got the incompatable disc message. After reading all the other responses, I just want to get my video footage off the camera and dump it and go buy another brand. I feel as screwed as everyone else. JVC suggested to clean the unit, I bought a CD/DVD cleaner, of course it didn't work.

  • Jay Man 345 Sep 18, 2008

Same thing here. I had used the share station 5 or 6 times and it worked fine. I didn't use it for about a year and now it says "Incompatable disk". When I plug it into my PC, I get an error message that says I have an I/O device error. I tried inserting a DVD lens cleaner disc and I get the same message on the PC. So basically I have no way of cleaning it.

I actually am just trying to use this thing after vacation. The disk it came with is not recognized, then i went and purchased other disks which didn't work. It came free with the camera from best buy, so I guess I can't be too upset by it, but what a bummer. JVC has some explaining to do.

Basically I think that the DVD burner is a lemon. I needed to clear out the memory for an upcoming trip, and I was upset! I kept getting the incompatible disc message. I had made several DVDs, and then didn't use it for about a year. This seems to be common. Anyway,I made my DVD's using my Samsung DVD Recorder and VHS player I had bought a couple of years ago. I went to Radio Shack and got the cable to go from the player to the camera, used Maxell RW 2X, (any other speed disk will not record), and it worked!

You need to read page 8 of the JVC CU-VD20 DVD Burner instruction manual:
Recommended DVD-R Vendor - JVC, TDK, Verbatim, SONY
Writing Speed for DVD-R is 8X maximum, this is the real issue as I first bought 16X TDKs and they did not work, so now I need to buy 8X.
That's a bummer as most stores only supply 16X now.

I too had the problem.  Used it once and it worked.  Next did not.  After looking at the manual, it says different speeds will work and different brands.  I had a hunch since it only records at 2x, that is the only speed that would work.  I went to Wal-Mart and bought a lens cleaning disk and some Memorex 2x DVD-RW.  It is now working.  I believe a 2x disk is the only dvd that will work.

The only solution I found was to use a JVC DVD -R. Nothing else worked.

The type of disc varies from manufacturerer to manufacturer. Since there are a variety of DVDs,( +R,-R +RW,-RW and Dual Layer) you need to look at the documentation that came with your drive to see what is conpatible

From what I've read in the manual the camcorder should be connected directly to the external dvd burner not through the computer.

Jvc gz-mg130 and jvc cu-vd20

I had this problem with the GZ-MG505AA (connecting to WinXP SP3). I tried a different USB cable and it worked first time.
Not sure what is different about the cables (the original cable worked fine with my WM 6 mobile phone).
