SOURCE: toaster lever wont stay down

Open the toaster up and look inside by the levers, there should be a little piece that will keep the lever down, if this is missing, then you may need to replace the toaster, if not, then the little piece may be stuck, you can use the following to try and loosen it up,
1. WD-40

SOURCE: toaster won't stay in down position

We opened up our toaster and scraped some baked-on crumbs off the top of the electromagnet that controls the carriage catch. When we closed it back up, it worked again.

SOURCE: tefal avanti hi speed 4 slice toaster one side not

When the push down lever hits the bottom it pushes another little lever which makes contact with the positive and negative terminals. over time, these terminals get ever so slightly bent, especially if you start pushing the lever down hard. what you have to do is take the toaster apart, get to the positive and negative terminals and pinch back into shape with some pliers. you should understand once you look at it. Then put back together. if it doesn't work then it's likely a component has gone so, unless you have a multi-meter and a soldering iron I wouldn't suggest doing this.

Oh yeah, unplug it before you do anything.

SOURCE: toaster will not stay down

I found that the problem was caused by crumbs getting onto the electro-magnets that hold the toaster down, and onto the contacts that supply power to the magnets ant elements. Removing the cover was the trickiest part - my machine had screws with triangular holes in the heads that a normal screwdriver would not fit. I found, however, that these are the same screws as used in McDonalds Happy Meal toys, and you can get special drivers on ebay or from amazon for them. After that it was just a question of cleaning all the contact points inside the toaster (make sure the toaster is UNPLUGGED!!). 15 minute job.

The left side of the toaster does not stay engaged...if I hold it down it heats up but it doesn't stay down ..it doesn't catch.

There are two printed circuit boards inside front of toaster - One PC board for each side. The circuit board on the side that won't latch down in the "toasting" position , is defective. Now, does anyone have access to a schematic for this toaster?

We have the four slice toaster. The arm on the left will no longer stay down. The side still toasts, but the arm will not lock in the down position.

try removing the lower claening plate and remove the bread crumbs and see if that makes it work again. Many people don't know there is a cleaning try on the toaster.

Toaster does not stay held down to toast wct 708

there is a "contact switch" that when there is power in the system, it stays down. If hte contact switch is bad, it releases and will not stay down. COntact switch needs to be replaced, unfortuantely I have the same problem and can't seem to get the part.

Bread won't toast

We ran into the same problem today with our toaster. There was never a problem before I cleaned it--not only by sliding out the crumb drawer, but by turning it upside down to dislodge every last crumb. After that, It would not stay down when pushed down.

My husband took the cover off and found that a magnet is what keeps the lever down when the toaster's on, and allows it to go back up when the toasting is done. It's an electro magnet that works only when the toaster is on. It seems that when I turned the unit upside down and rightside up again, crumbs landed on the magnet's contact plates (which are about 1/4" x 1/2") and would not allow the magnet to engage. Because the magnet wouldn't engage, the lever would not stay down, and the toaster shut off. Brush off the magnets, replace the cover and toast away!
