I had the same problem. The hard drive was bad. I replaced it and it is good as new. It is a Toshiba HDD. Good luck

Hi all, Not to worry, Will provide the TS steps...

  1. Before placing the iPod into disk mode, you should verify that it is charged.
  2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
  5. Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"

Then follow these steps as well

If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

Then follow this step as well:
  1. Ensure that you have an active Internet connection as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may need to be downloaded to your computer.
  2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes if you do not already have it installed.
  3. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
  4. After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
  5. Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
  6. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
    • Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
    • Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
    • Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
    • Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
  7. If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.
  8. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
    • Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
    • Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
  9. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
  10. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Make sure you got the latest itunes version and latest ipod classic version.  Also you need to be on the original computer you used to sync with the ipod.  Open up itunes and connect the ipod.  Your ipod should show up on the computer.  Just click on the restore itunes back to factory default button and you should be g to g.

On the ipod touch the itunes icon comes out and is a usb cable with an arow pointing to the itunes icon


This will get your ipod working again through a restoring process:
Connect your ipod touch to your computer and make sure itunes is open. Hold down the power and home button for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds only release the power button and keep holding the home button until your itunes says it found an ipod in recovery mode. Then restore your ipod by clicking restore on itunes, or restore to a backup you might have made.

That's not the right way to put your iPod touch to restore (DFU) mode. And to make it even worse, there is NO WAY of restoring your iPod touch without wiping everything out of it. Restore will always remove all data from your device.

The only possible way of keeping everything in your iPod is to remember the passcode. Yes, that's the only way, because iTunes (from your computer) won't even recognize your iPod, so you have no way of creating a back-up.

Now, if remembering your passcode seems impossible, and you still wanna be able to use your iPod touch again, you should forget about all the data in it and restore it while in DFU (restore) mode.

To put your iPod to DFU mode, plug your iPod to the computer. It doesn't matter if your iPod is not recognized by iTunes, just plug it in.

I forgot the password to my ipod touch


There is only one way, you must restore the ipod which wipes out everything if you forgot it.

Updating and Restoring iPod touch Software
You can use iTunes to update or reinstall iPod touch software, restore default settings, and delete all data on iPod touch.
• If you update, the iPod touch software is updated. Your downloaded applications, settings, and data aren’t affected.
Note: In some cases, an update may also include restoring iPod touch.
• If you restore, the latest version of iPod touch software is reinstalled, settings are restored to their defaults, and data stored on iPod touch is deleted, including downloaded applications, songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. If you’ve backed up iPod touch with iTunes on your computer, you can restore data from the backup at the end of the restore process.
Deleted data is no longer accessible via the iPod touch user interface, but isn’t erased from your iPod touch. For information about erasing all content and settings, see “Resetting iPod touch” on page 122.
Update or restore iPod touch:
1 Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes.
2 Connect iPod touch to your computer.
3 Select iPod touch in the iTunes sidebar and click the Summary tab.
4 Click “Check for Update.” iTunes tells you if there’s a newer version of the iPod touch software available.
5 Click Update to install the latest version of the software. Or click Restore to restore. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process.

Restoring an ipod


Make sure you got the latest itunes version and latest ipod classic version.  Also you need to be on the original computer you used to sync with the ipod.  Open up itunes and connect the ipod.  Your ipod should show up on the computer.  Just click on the restore itunes back to factory default button and you should be g to g.

Listen to the iPod when it is connected to the computer. Do you hear repetitive clicking sounds from the hard drive? If so, your hard drive is broken. It's not too hard to replace the hard drive yourself. Here is an iPod Repair Guide that shows how to open an iPod. Parts are easily available on Ebay. Sometimes you need to restore the iPod even though you've already deleted the content. Below I have posted a step by step for restoring your iPod touch in iTunes. If you are still unable to sync the iPod after restoring please do let me know :)

Less Memory than my Ipod is Supposed to Have


You should start by restoring the iPod Nano and iPod touch using iTunes. Below is a step by step for both. This should resolve sync and capacity issues.
