Question about Alba Televison & Video
A solid line down or across the screen is due to problems in the display itself. Unfortunately, there's no way to repair it because the bad circuitry is integrated into the display. The only cure is display replacement.
Not the solution you want, but that's how it is. (With the huge number of transistors that are part of the display, it's actually amazing there are as few failures as there are.)

Apparently you can get your software updated by sending your Sagem PVR 62** to their offices in Chertsey, Surrey. I am about to do that. This is as a result of getting an answer from Sagem as follows:-
"Following the impact of the national retune on Wednesday 31/09/2009, Sagem have decided to offer an additional software update for their old PVR62xx range in the UK. However, since Sagem have to cover the costs for the implementation of an unscheduled update, customers will be charged £23 for their update which will be performed in our head office in Chertsey / Surrey. Please complete this form and return it to email@example.com"
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 32" ALBA 15 MONTHS OLD.
I am afraid it sounds as though either your backlight or power inverter has gone faulty, may be worth contacting alba to see if they will honour the warrenty (unlikely but worth a go) otherwise maybe try your home insurance to see if its covered, failing either of these options, if you feel confident doing so, disassemble the tv and look for any signs of visible damage (capacitors leaking or any components looking burned or scorche, and replace. Try looking for any panel markings which will allow you to search for a price to replace the whole unit.
Unfortunately I cant give you and hard and fast cure, and it is very difficult to tell whether it is the inverter or the backlight has gone (having said that, if you are getting picture at the very beginning, it may suggest that the inverter is getting the power to the backlight ok, which may suggest its the backlight at fault.)
Hope this helps.
