I finally ignored the poorly-written instructions for programming a personal code and simply entered the factory code first and then pressed the prog/enter code button. The safe opened. The instructions tell you to push the prog/enter code first and then enter the factory code or personal code to open the safe. Wrong! Do it my way should this problem happen to you.

SOURCE: CAN NOT OPEN MY SAFE,
To retrieve your lost sentry fireproof safe combination. First, find your safe's Model and Serial Number. The Serial Number is printed on the small label on the right side of safe (on paper tag near hinge) or under handle. As this information is confidential a valid credit card and email is needed to verify a customers name and address
sentry safe combination archives searches. Do come with a service charge although it's definitely cheaper then buying a new home electronic sentry fireproof safe.
A good locksmith should be able to help you with the dialing programming instructions and lost Sentry Safe Key Replacements

Enter your code on the keypad located on the front of the safe. Some electronic digital safes require you to input a special character like "#" before and after your code. The safe should either beep, have a LED turn green, or display "OPEN" if you have correctly entered the code.
Turn the handle to the right within five seconds of correctly entering the code. If you wait too long, the safe will lock and you will have to enter your code ag
Open the safe with a key. Use your emergency key that came with the safe to open it if you forgot the code or if the batteries have died. Remove the key cover from either the handle or the control panel to reveal the lock.
Enter your code to open the safe.
Place the electronic digital safe into code reset mode. On some models you need to hold the last digit of the code or press the "*" button to get into code reset mode. Other safes require you to open them and press a small red button on the inside of the door.
Enter your new code on the keypad and press "#" to finish. Some safes may require you to press "*" or a letter to finish the code. If the safe requires it, enter the new code again to confirm that you entered it correctly.
Use your code to open the electronic digital safe's door.
Locate and remove the battery cover on the inside of the door.
Replace the used batteries with new ones. For most safes, this will require two or four AA batteries.
Test the batteries. Use your code while the door is open to test the batteries before closing the safe.

If you can get the door open.
There is a reset button on the hinge side of the inside of the door.
Press the reset button, and then you have about five seconds to enter your new code.
Test the code with the door open!
That way, if it does not work the first time, then the doors is still open, and you can do it again.
Warning: Place fresh batteries into the battery compartment before doing this, or you will just get locked out again.
If, you cannot get the door open, and your keys are locked in the safe, then call Harbor Freight.
Call Harbor Freight:
& Parts (Safe Keys) 1-800-444-3353
Give them the key code number. (it is located on the key insert, where you stick the key in the lock)
It takes about two weeks to get a new key/keys.
