From your description it sounds like image burn-in. That is caused by some parts of the screen having many more hours of use than the others. In most cases due to a smaller screen format only using a portion of the screen. Your set has a feature in the service menu to even this out by burning the rest of the screen back into proportion. Please only let a pro attempt this. Hope that helps answer your question.

your television is going to need an internal repair. most likely in the power supply of the television. it would be best to unplug the television until it can be repaired. If you would like to repair the television yourself then please use our premium service so an expert can walk you through it. Or you can search for a local repair service using our local repair search engine.

This sounds like your light engine is going out. NOT GOOD! It all depends when you bought your set and if its under warranty. I had the same thing with mine bought is 2004, light engine died in 12/08 and was out of warranty. Talked to the rep. said they knew about the problem. They replaced my light engine for free but I had to have a authorized dealer install it . I had to pay for the labor $300, Now I've got another problem with it shutting down and back on.(That's another story.) I would call Hitachi and let them know that you know they have problems with this. Keep trying they may replace your to. To buy one out right is $400 to $500 plus labor, some folks have paid $800 to $1400 , That's a shame. Hope this is helpful. GOOD LUCK!!

Without seeing the dark cycle myself it is difficult to guess what. I only can think of something hit the screen (ball?) or perhaps someone bumped into the screen?
If the bump was minor, it could become lesser.
Perhaps you should ask a technician to look, or take a picture from the screen, one when switched on and one switched off, but close to where the dark circle is and take the pictures to a tech.
