Bad power supply or backlight inverter.

If the backlight is not turning on, you should be able to see the lcd image by shining a bright flashlight at the screen.

Backlight inverters are loud, so you can hear them operating (high pitched whine) and if the backlight is coming on, you can see white light leaking around the edge of the screen, and even a little inside the cabinet.

Philips are legendary for having power supplies that fail due to bad capacitors, so that could be the culprit as well.

    Dowt (homer simpson sound).

Of course plasmas have no display inverter or backlight. A plasma TV is much more dependent on the health of it's power supply since it takes more power to make plasma, versus a LCD which relies on low voltage signals to switch transistors on and off.

Instead of inverters that break, plasmas have two highly-stressed boards which are typically called the X-sustain and Y-Sustain (XSUS/YSUS boards). These boards drive the high voltage for the X and Y axis of the plasma display to make it light up (think bug-Zapper).

But again, Philips power supplies are not the best, so it could be a sustain board or the power supply.

When you have an intermittent part, one way a technician can confirm the diagnosis is to use circuit-cooler (freeze spray) on the suspected bad part, and confirm that it stops working once warm.

The most common issue when things fail when hot are faulty solder connections on circuit boards. the heat expands the parts, and any cracks/faults become critical.

Only have part of picture on phillips 50tv

Are you missing the top portion of the picture or the bottom portion of the picture? looking inside the TV will reveal two modules to the furthest left of the inside. These are the upper and lower Y buffer modules. Replace the top one if missing the top half of the picture or the bottom one if missing that segment. Usually you can find good used parts on Ebay. Or Shopjimmy.com.

I have an old 36 inch widescreen Philips CRT TV which has been working fine for 7 years until yesterday when the whole screen just went blue with a series of white horizontal lines. The audio is still OK...

Hello
Since there is a blue screen atleast, I don't think that the picture tube is gone. The fault may be either to its chroma IC or video output section. In both sections fault cases, this type of horizontal lines [parellel to each other at about 1 inch or so apart the entire screen] will be seen. Just check the voltages at the three cathode, ie, red, blue and green of the piclture tube. This can be measured at the picrture tube neck card. If you have through knoledge in electronics, have patience and enough tools to do the work, inform me through Fixya. Without these, you can't work on a tv, especially in Philips.
Otherwise, get it checked by any expereinced service technician. OK.

Are you getting picture or sound at all? If not, you could have a very common power supply failure. If you get sound or picture, then you may have a faulty capacitor or resistor on one of the system boards
