    Thank you.....

We actually had tigtened the nuts too much.... Once loosening them the first gear speed worked properly.

We loosened them to just finger tight is it ok to run the machine like that, or should they be able to be tightend harder without this first gear problem happening...

The reason we were tinkering with the nuts to begin with is that there was a small amount of oil dripping from this area. We had recently moved the mixer up on to a table (tilted the machine forward and down to lift)... would that cause it to drip for a period of time or is it an indication of another problem ?

    Thank you so much !

Amy, depending on how old your mixer is there are 2 types of clutches for 1st gear.these could be your problems--a key is sheared on the shaft--shaft/gear is broken.the bottom part of the mixer where you put on the attachements is called the planetary, does it look like it has moved down?you could tell if the dough hook, wire whip, ect, ect is hitting the bottom of the bowl.if this is the case its just simply tightening the 2 nuts next to the beater shaft.if this is not the case you would have to dissasemble the transmission.let me know.

Please submit more information of the actual problem.
One issue could be that 1st and 2nd are the same speed, but third is faster. That is caused by having the two nuts in the bottom of the planetary too tight. This pinches the bushings in the second speed gear which drives by friction faster than the gears of 1st causing 1st to slip. Back off the acorn nut and thin lock nut perhaps a half to a full turn. Hold the lock nut and tighten the acorn nut to it. You can tes the setting by pushing up on he planetary. You should see about a 1/16" movement.
If you only have one speed in all gears, either the internal gear selector is broken, or a key is sheared between a gear and shaft.

Hobart a200 first gear not working

slacken the big acorn nut away from the bottom of the planetary and then tighten the lock nut to the acorn nut. When adjusted and secured, the planetary should have a little vertical play, maybe 1/16".
That will stop the second gear driving from friction from being too tight.

Hobart A200 1st and 2nd gear have same speed after lever was removed and reinstalled.

I took mine apart completely and reassembled everything and greased everything and mine is doing the same thing. I'm thinking, also, that it is the tightening of the top lock nut.

Hobart A200 mixer 1st speed doesn't work 2nd and 3rd work fine

Could be that a gear is missing (broken) on the shaft that works the 1st gear. Check out the schematic at

It could be the gear HM2-748

Sound like bearings

Ist check your agitator shaft for looseness. the shaft you put the beater on. wiggle side to side. if tight no play. If in first its quiet but you can here a grumble under load but second gets louder. and third even louder. If the shaft is tight. your gears down there are warn. you can take that all off with the two nuts underneath. and check the grease on the gears but even with new grease on them it most likely stay loud. grease it with hobart grease from your loacal hobart for the A-200 planitary not the transmision they also fve grease for Trans. if you can take the noise run it that way if not decide which arm & leg you want to give hobart for new gears.
