Question about IBM ThinkPad T41 Notebook

1 Answer

Ethernet indicator light always yellow

Have Thinkpad t41 running XP Professional. Trying to connect to netzero dialup. Get a 633 modem or other device already in use. Not sure if this is a problem but the Ethernet indicator light is always solid yellow with nothing connected to the port. Have another lap top that I can connet to net zero using the same phone cable. No Ethernet lights are on.
Netzero properties shows the Agere Systems AC 97 modem is using Com 3. When I look at device manager it only shows LPT1 & Com 1. The computer that connect also only shows LPT 1 & Com 1, so not sure thats a problem.

Any help appreciated!

Go into device manager and then drivers and resources and change the comport there. One and three have same physical location and different addresses.

SOURCE: The ethernet port is not working, and the network card is not being detected in device manager

If the device manager is not detecting the network device it is not going to work. turn off the laptop and remove the network/modem device located on the bottom of the laptop, then restart the laptop, now shutdown the laptop again and reinstall the device restart the laptop if device manager still does not detect the device then it is defective and will need to be replaced.

Try this driver. I've used it on a few I-series Thinkpads that I've had come through my shop. After the download, uninstall the ethernet drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the ethernet port and reinstall the drive automatically. If this one doesn't work for you, let me know, an d we'll try a different one.

SOURCE: Ethernet network adapter not working on T20

Also , not all IBM T20/T21 laptops shipped with a ethernet card fitted.
some had a modem only card. some a combined modem/ethernet card.

if the tiny LEDs light when plugged into a known active network connection then the card is present.
if they dont light up then it probably isnt present.

to check for the card..remove the panel secured by a single screw (just above center of the base)
the panel is in the top right quadrant of the bottom of the PC if you look at the bottom with the power connector at the top and the battery at the bottom.

remove the screw. open the panel.
there may or may not be a card present.
if there is if there is only a single white connector (with 2 small wires) then it is the Modem only card.
if there are 2 connectors one with 2 wires and another bigger with 8 wires..then you have the network card. check the connectors a fully pushed home.
its fiddly good luck

Yellow question mark beside Network Controller PCI Modem Unknown Device

The same model ThinkPad can have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.

When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it's file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true

You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

The modem is extremely slow-most downloads are far too slow

Dialup phone lines usually only transmit a minimum of 8 Baud. NetZero's high speed (5X) faster is done by caching pages you have already visited, not actially running internet but loading pages faster on your computer. Check your modem setting, 56k, 112K are normal speed setting to connect. Check your actual connection speed, 28.8 is probably all that you are getting on dialup.

Use a wired router for dial-up (NETZERO) connection..

You want to use a LAN with a router that uses a dial-up as a backbone internet connection for your LAN.
This is absolutely possible.

If you just want to share the connection that one computer has, and dont want to buy a router that has a built-in modem, try this

If you are running windows, There is a feature called Internet Connection Sharing (ICS.) It will share the dialup across the network.

Just 1 hookup the router and all the pcs to it. 2 Dialup the machine with the modem. 3 Enable ICS on that machine. 4 Youre LAN is online.

In XP, goto the network connections, and while you have 2 active connections in there (the dialup and the LAN port connected to the router), right click the dialup, goto properties. goto advanced tab, and click on enable ICS.
The other computers should be served IP's automatically and NAT'd out to the internet by the computer running ICS.

(The other computers should be automatically setup to the internet like they should be and connected to the dialup riunning on the ICS (host) computer)

why fight it , let it be on com 1 then,
go into the bios and disable the serial ports .
that may be the easiest fix as long as you don't need the serial port for anything.
but if you have a serial mouse oh boy.
