Question about Compaq Presario 700 470024-192 Notebook

C:\Windows\Panter\unattend.xml file is corrupted

After a system restore the computer boots up and comes to a blue background screen with the cursor but will not advance past that.

Throws the message on the quick tests:
SMART Hard drive has imminent fatal error

The restore does it's job w/o a problem it's only when the system starts to 'unpack' that it has troubles.

Error: Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\Windows\Panther\ unattend.xml]. The answer file is invalid.

I then slaved up the HD to my desktop and browsed to the above location and tried to open the indicated xml file to get that it's the only file that will not open correctly. All other XML files I tried work fine. File is 6k but IE can't open it

Was wondering if anyone had one of these around if they could shoot me the unattend.xml file so I can replace it to see if that helps out.

Thanks -

Why are you worried about this? You are getting a warning that the hard drive is about to die. In your place, I would copy any data I wanted to keep to the desktop and then replace the hard drive.
You can then image the original drive to the new one and try the restore again.
The Panther\unattend.xml file is created and Windows uses it during the restore process in order to know what to do, copying it from another computer (if you can find one) would probably totally mess up the installation. The reason it cannot be parsed is probably because it was created on a section of the hard drive that has already failed - remember, your hard drive is dying.

hi a few things come to mind when you say that it just crashed was there a blue screen when the writing came on c:\windows........ can you tell me if the pc was over heating at the time it did this?
when a pc just stops dead (frooze up) like that it could very well be a high sys fault in the programming which is most likely caused by a virus that has attacked the main windows program causing the pc to crash. this will require a full reprogramming of the pc to fix the problem this is the only way (sorry)
if the pc was over heating the cpu may have been cooked
eg the heat paste on the cpu could have dried up and over heated the cpu how to test this is when you switch your pc on wait 30 sec and if the laptop blows warm air out then most likely the cpu has over heated this can be fixed by applying more paste to the cpu if you have not tried running it for a long time to fix it .
there is also another fix to reboot your pc .this is a program called micro scop boot repair this program will reboot your pc from the dos at the start of your windows program load this on to a cd place in your cd drive before you start the pc . first you must download from the internet this program then burn it to a cd ok .
this program finds and repairs the problem in you boot sys folders to start windows it is a very good program to have .
please try these things out and then let me know if this has fix your problems for you
all the best to you all
thank you acemasters

Wont run windows at all. Says: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You have a corrupt registry and it needs to be replaced.
Doing a System Restore will do this. Since you cannot run it from the hard drive, you will have to boot from a Windows DVD.
Here is the procedure

You did not specify which version of Windows you have so I just picked W7 as an example. If you need more specific instructions, you need to give more specific information.

Oresario laptop starts but goes to black screen with cursor

Windows is not starting. Try to start in safe mode and if you can, do a system restore back to when it was working.
If you can't do this, then you'll need to insert the system disk and boot from it and choose the option to repair your computer.
I suspect that you have corrupt Windows files or a corrupt registry. Repairing it with the system disk should solve the problem. Either that, or you will have to do a reinstallation.

Corrupted user32.dll. boots to a blue screen,

You can try to do a system restore using the system recovery.

There are different ways for doing a system recovery on XP computers and on Vista or Windows 7 computer.

Assuming you are using Windows Vista
On boot press the F11 key repeatedly, When you reach the Recovery manager screen select Advance options.

Select the option do restore the computer to an earlier time.

It will show you the restore points

Select the best restore point and try to do a restore

If system restore does not work then you will have to follow the same steps to perform a system recovery by selecting the option to restore the computer to its original factory condition.

Monitor probs.

Since you do not state what Operation system you are using.
Will assume what most lemmings use now. Windows.

Can you hold the F5 key down while the machine boots.
Then does Safe mode come up?

If it does, this usually means the operating system or some file(s) needed are corrupt. Sometimes you can select "last known good start up".
However this has NEVER worked for me.

If you have Restore points activated.
You may be able to restore back to a point before the corruption occured.

some help on restore points from MS website:

Good luck!

Computer will not start, it turns on then a blue screen comes up and restarts

When you turn on your laptop keep pressing the F8 key to get to a boot menu, then choose safe mode and see if you can get into windows that way. If you can get into windows then go into the system tools folder and choose system restore and choose a date the last time you didn't get the blue screen of death and let the sysem reboot and see if you can get back into windows.

If you can't get into safe mode and your still getting the blue screen of death, then that means you have corrupt system files and you'll need to restore your laptop back to factory defaults with your cds if you have them.
