Question about Video Game Consoles & Games

PS3 been working fine over HDMI to my 32" LCD TV since September 07. Turned on PS3 last week no picture, no sound via HDMI. Plugged in Component Cable, turned on PS3 (pressing on button for 5 secs) got picture and sound through component cable worked fine. Set PS3 back to HDMI, no picture or sound through HDMI on my TV. Tried a different cable, no difference. Tried a DVD player with HDMI output to TV, worked fine with both HDMI cables. Went back to PS3 no picture, no sound over HDMI, set back to Component cable (after 30 secs) works fine. It has worked the past 4 to 5 months without problem, so can't be HDMI compatiability issue between TV and PS3. Can't be TV or HDMI cable has worked fine with HDMI output from DVD player. Any suggestions other than broken HDMI port on PS3?

The PS3 is a 60gb UK PAL Edition
The 32" LCD TV is a Evesham HD-Ready LCD TV.

When I first got my PS3 last September / October it connected to the TV via the HDMI without problem and have had both 720p and 1080i working fine.

Up until last week it has been working fine when I turned it off, but the following day when I powered it up, I had no picture or sound, though from the LED on my ADSL Router the PS3 was running, and when I converted it back to component video (by holding the power on button for 5 secs at start up) it was working fine with them, but when I set it to try HDMI, I get no picture coming up on the TV from the HDMI port.
If I plug in a DVD player with HDMI output then the TV works fine with HDMI.
I have tried powering off both TV and PS3 over night but it makes no difference.

The only slight problem I have had in the past, was that over HDMI I couldn't get a picture from a normal DVD movie disc and would have to repower the PS3 to get it working again (though never lost HDMI connection), but Blu-Ray movies would play without problem and as I never bought the PS3 to play normal DVDs this has never been an issue.

    Any ideas?

To try and make things clear

PS3 to TV via Component Cable - Works fine

DVD player to TV via HDMI cable - Works fine

PS3 to TV via HDMI cable - No picture, no sound (but before last week worked fine)

I hope that makes it clear

    To Micromaster,

I was going to reply to the other expert, but accidently pressed the 'Accept' button rather than 'reply' button.

  • martinjgale Feb 18, 2008

That was my conclusion, but I thought I would check encase there was some known PS3 problem with HDMI (i.e. accidently going into 1080p mode - which I know my TV doesn't accept) that was easily fixed rather than returning the PS3 back to Sony for fixing.

TV Connectivity
The issue of connectivity between the PS3 and the display is very complex and depends on the type of TV (Analog, Digital or HD Ready), the maker of TV (until recently, only Toshiba TVs have component AV connections as standard in Europe, most other Euro TV sets use SCART which can not carry an HD signal) and specification of TV (the very latest HD Ready TV sets have wider connectivity options than earlier HD "capable" TVs from the same manufacturer which may have lacked HDMI), and finally the configuration of the PS3 model purchased.

    Hello Sir,

May add another on what i have search through sony regarding on your problem about your ps3. it goes on like this:

DailyTech reported last week that Sony's PlayStation 3 has issues with upscaling to 1080i resolution. The problem stems from the fact that some older HDTV's can only display in high definition resolutions of 480p or 1080i -- 720p is not an option for these TVs. For a PS3 title running in native 720p resolution, a PS3 will not upscale to 1080i, but will instead downgrade to 480p.

According to GameDaily BIZ, Sony has acknowledged that this is a problem for the PS3. The following statement was provided by Sony Computer Entertainment America:

A small number of older High Definition television sets found in the United States only have 1080i inputs for HD signals. Those televisions will currently only play some PS3 titles at 480p resolution. PS3 games render images at either 720p or 1080p for High Definition and you need 720p input on the TV to play select games that do not support 1080p. This is an issue on the side of the individual television sets, which do not accept 720p input, so when a game outputs an HD signal only at 720p, these select TVs have to display the game at 480p instead.

A fix is in the works, but there was no timetable given on availability.

I just wanna clear everything what you stated on your post for me to give my opinion and conclusion for that problem.

    this one:

    - first you said before that when you use a or plugged it on your component cable it works, right?

    - second is you tried to use your HDMI cable with your DVD player and works fine, right?

& third when you switch back and use your HDMI to your PS3 and it not working and you got the same problem, right?

    Thanks Sir,

As i analyze the problem with a your given testing and about your device. I think we've got a problem with the HDMI output of your PS3. But your Ps3 is still good but you can get any signal on your TV when you try to connect it with HDMI cable, Your TV is good but the when connecting by HDMI through your ps3 then we got no signal.

Therefore PS3 HDMI output connector could be damaged.

JVC LT-32DS75SJ issue with HDMI

Try this

1. Turn ON TV
2. Connect PS3 to TV HDMI input
3. select TV HDMI input for PS3
4. turn OFF PS3 if it is ON
5. Press and hold the [I/O]Power button until the PS3 until you get the "HDMI Detected" message.

Also, this TV has a circuit that deactivates the HDMI if the rear cover is removed. It is possible the HDMI may have been turned OFF. This is reset in the service menu of the TV.
