Question about Denon AVR-587

1 Answer

My very old Denon AV Receiver (DRA-55V) works fine except that one of the channels sounds 'gated' or thuddy and staticy...music is heard (in all sets of speakers and headphones) but quality in one channel is shot to hell. Any ideas?

Check your speaker A - B channel push-button switchces. They tend to get worn and contacts internally corroded after all these years <!-- from fixya rte -->

Can it drive 4 ohm speakers?

If you connect 2 4 ohm speakers in series it will work. You shouldn't try a 4 ohm by itself. You'll kill the output stage of the amp.

My better guess is a CMOS chip is either bad or there is a cold solder connection in the vicinity. If the power supply is bad, the receiver would not power up.

The unit is rated at 120 watts total output ( 60 watts per channel x2 channels) As far as being worth fixing it depends on the price of the parts and what you want to do after its fixed. I looked around a little and the unit gets good reveiws from owners. They say its great for a "just music" system.

If you like the sound (when it works), then yes it is worth fixing. There are a number of possiblities for this symptom. Can you supply a rough location so I can recommend a local shop for you?

Denon receiver (DRA 397) will not speak to iPod dock

IF YOUR NOT USING A DENON IPOD DOCKING STATION IT WILL NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY.
YOU CAN CONNCET OTHER TYPES OF IPOD DOCKING STATIONS BUT YOU WILL NOT HAVE CONTROL THROUGH THE DENON AND ONLY CONNECT THE AUDIO FOR THAT DOCKING STATION TO THE DENON AS ANOTHER SOURCE INPUT

Connecting new tv to DRA-685

you can use the headphone jack just get an adaptor to change from the headphone type to RCA type. adjust the volume of the tv to 3/4 of the way to give line level to the stereo, use an aux input on the stereo. if you had a suround sound dolby digital / DTS receiver then use the digital coax out to that type of receiver, but since you have an anolog 2 channel receiver you must use the only anolog source (the headphone).
