Question about Yamaha 1,000 Watt Portable Generator #EF1000ISC

1 Answer

Can the ecu memory be flashed on a yamaha EF2800iportable generator? My 2800i will start and run for about 90 seconds and then shuts down. Carb is fine. Two issues: 1. It is not generating electricity during that short run. 2. Apparently the ecu tells the coil to stop generating spark, causing the shutdown. The repair shop (not a Yamaha one) I took it to said that they are sure that the problem is the ECU, which they referred to as "the brain." They said the only thing they could do would be to replace the ECU. That's an $800 part, plus labor. They said they had no idea how to troubleshoot the ''brain.'' What is the likelihood that its memory needs to be flashed? Would a Yamaha dealer do that? What should I expect to pay for that service, if so? The generator has about 500-600 hours on it, is 7 years old. Thanks, kwc

It sounds like its running on the gas in the carburetor and not the gas filling back up to run more, I bet you have a gas supply problem to the carburetor! Try Babbitts Yamaha Partshouse online...

SOURCE: conversion of Yamaha gasoline electricazl generator engine to natural gas

My answer:

Hello Bill:

Here are the site links you'll need to check and/or get info, or buy your adapter kit for your Yami YG4600D Genset conversion kit.

Most likely it's running an 8 or 10HP engine on it now? In any case it's most likely less then 12HP. Not sure what size engine you have, as you didn't say only for the model #? On older Gensets it's harder to track down the HP rated engine is all.

For your Yami YG4600D Genset there you most likely will have your choice of at least 4 adapter kits depending on if you are going to keep gasoline as an option. If you're definitely NOT going to be ever running gasoline again then there are 1 or 2 adapter kits to choose from.

Use the site links below, and then browse whichever area you want as there are many options there. The last link listed takes you through all the different engines by make & model #'s.

I would also shop around locally where you are in LA, as you might be able to get that adapter kit for a lot less then the $227 to $267 they are asking for there at that site.

If you don't see your exact model # (or kit) there call them on their 800 toll free # listed at their site.

Also - if this site doesn't meet your expectations customer service wise at least you will have a starting off point with the wealth of information supplied there!

Please post me a reply as to this info helping you solve your adapter kit problem there by following my posting recommendations above. Also please rate my troubleshooting fix as well.

Keep me posted and I'll follow up as well.

SOURCE: Generator won't start

After removing the carb, disassembling and blowing it out (twice) to no avail, got a one gallon can of Gunk Parts and Carburetor dip. Removed the carburetor (again), removed float bowl cover, gasket, float, and needle valve and soaked it in the cleaner for several hours. Blew it out (again) and reinstalled it. Now generator starts on first pull like new!

SOURCE: Yamaha ef2400is generator needs some choke to run

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your local lawn & garden dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

SOURCE: yamaha ef1000is was rained on, starts and runs

Sounds like the rectifier got fried. Moisture in these units is a dangerous thing. Even if you feel the unit sat long enough to dry ouit, it sometines will hold moisture in the electrical componants.

SOURCE: Yamaha 5700 homelite generator stopped

Hello Karen,

What you are describing is not good at all.

There are 3 things that can cause what you said.
1) The engine seized due to lack of oil, though this generator should have a low oil shutdown, it may have failed, especially if the generator was being operated off level.
2) The engine has over heated, to the point that it seized.
3) A mechanical failure in the alternator, perhaps a bad bearing, has created a large amount of drag on the engine.

Would you check the oil, and post back where it sits at? Might have other options.

Sounds like a governor issue. Check linkage to governor.

Did you read up on what that fault code means? I'm stumped personally. You didn't mention checking the plug wires though, but given how thorough you're being I'm guessing you already replaced them.

R6 ECU reset on yamaha

Sometimes it is as simple as removing the battery and waiting 20 minutes and reconnecting it. If your model has an immobilizer (not sure what year they started using them on the R6) Your stuck heading to the dealer with your keys, title and bike to have them unlock it.

Remove & Check Float bowl on carburettor for any foreign matter. If there is any, it could have got into jets causing engine to run lean (only run with choke) and not be able to carry load in this state. A cleanout of the carby would not hurt and check the fuel tank for any sediment as well.
