I think the answer is yes - lots of ads on ebay for relevant supplies....
i.e.

I want to refill a 73hn cartridge

Hello.
Unfortunately you can not refill any of the OEM 73n Series. You can get ink into the cartridge but there is not a way of over-riding the Ink Levels.....and as you know if the printer thinks it is empty it will not print.
The good news is that re-fillable cartridges are available and work well depending on the brand. Cheap ones from E-bay can have some issues, it is worth some research to get good quality refillable cartridges.
Search "Affordable refill Inks" or contact gnlproducts for info on them. Both these companies are based in Australia and have a good track record.

How do I remove the black ink cartridge to put in a new one?

1 Remove and Install Cartridges Be sure you have your replacement cartridges handy before you begin. You must install new cartridges immediately after removing the old ones. Caution:
Do not open ink cartridge packages until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are vacuum packed to maintain reliability. 1. Turn on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series. If a cartridge is low or expended, you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen. If a cartridge is expended, you must replace it to be able to print. If a cartridge is low, you can continue printing until the cartridge needs replacement. If you're replacing a cartridge before you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen, press Setup, select Maintenance, and press OK. Then select Change Ink Cartridge and press OK. 2. Open the scanner. 3. Open the cartridge cover. 4. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift the cartridge straight up to remove it. Dispose of it carefully. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refill it. Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. 5. Before opening the new cartridge package, shake it four or five times. (Do not shake a cartridge after opening the package; ink may leak.) 6. Remove the cartridge from the package, but be careful not to touch the green chip on the cartridge. 7. Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the cartridge. Caution:
Do not remove any other labels or seals, or ink will leak. 8. Insert the new cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place. 9. Once you replace all the necessary cartridges, close the cartridge cover and push it down until it clicks into place. 10. Close the scanner. 11. Press OK to begin charging the ink. This takes about 2 minutes. When you see a completion message on the LCD display screen, ink charging is finished. Caution:
Never turn off the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series while ink is charging or you'll waste ink.
If you see an ink replacement message on the LCD display screen, press OK and press down all the cartridges securely.

I have an Epson CX8400 and have replaced the Epson ink cartridges with non-Epson ink cartridges. This has worked in other Epson printers I have owned, but this printer keeps coming up with error messages...

It sounds like the cartridge chips are incompatible so you've probably been sold/sent the wrong cartridges.

It's possible that the printer you have is a later version with an updated firmware which has been programmed to refuse cartridge chips that were compatible with the first printers produced of this model but as the CX8400 is a relatively old printer I'd be a bit surprised if that were the case.

It's also possible that the cartridge chips are badly aligned, soiled (ie: dirty), or that the contact wires in the printhead (the thin/delicate wires that make contact with the chip when the cartridge is installed) are damaged.

Easiest way to tell if the cartridge chips are the problem though is to get a completely different cartridge, preferably some originals and see if they are accepted or not.

Hope that helps.

Printer was just working, i put in new ink cartridges and it won't Print anything since.

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

After cleaning print heads, which were causing poor print quality,i get an error message ...ink cartridges cannot be recognized. i am using after market cartridges, but have used them before with no issues....

Head cleaning procedure consumes a lot of ink. Ink level counter run too. So, after some head cleaning ink level counter reach zero level (ink out/empty level). Ink tank can not use again even there are ink at tank actually, because chip reach zero level. Reset chip using hardware resetter and you can refill ink tank.

How do I change the ink cartridges

If you’re replacing a cartridge before you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen, press Setup, select Maintenance, and press OK.

If you see an ink replacement message on the LCD display screen, press OK and press down all the cartridges securely.

If you remove an ink cartridge for later use, protect the ink supply area from dirt and dust and store it in the same environment as the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series with the label facing upward. Note that there is a valve in the ink supply port, making covers or plugs unnecessary, but care is needed to prevent the ink from staining items that the cartridge touches. Do not touch the ink cartridge ink supply port or surrounding area, and do not store the cartridge upside down.

If you remove a low or expended ink cartridge, you cannot reinstall and use the cartridge.

Epson CX8400 ink cartridges run out early

Epson gives you a miserable 12 ml of ink. Then it reports empty when there is still 10-15% of the ink left. I saw someone set up a brand new CX8400, print a single 4x6 photo and it said he was out of cyan. I use reusable cartridges from http://www.ccs-digital.com They hold 20 ml, which is 2/3 more ink. The chips automatically reset to full if you take the cartridge out and put it back in, so you get to use every drop. The ink is in a separate container inside the main cartridge. When it's really empty, you pop out the ink tank and pop in a new one. The tanks are under $3 each. I think this is brilliant because it's like refilling only it avoids the risks and mess of refills.

I HAVE AN EPSON DX4400 ALL IN ONE PRINTER. I HAVE BOUGHT SO MANY DIFFERENT INK cartridge YET IT WILL NOT RECOGNISE ANY.

In March of 2007 Epson started putting a different chip in some of their cartridges so that refill companies couldn't refill them. My printer is a CX8400 just purchased last Oct but manufactured Dec of 2007. The date they changed the cartridges was March of 2007. You must then buy cartridges Original OEM or find a company that has cartridges for before that date or after depending on when your printer was made. Look at the bottom of the printer for little clock dials and you can determine the date of manufacture. On mine the first number was the year and the second the month. Check ink companies online to see if this applies to your printer. Some ink companies don't mention this or just send you the wrong ones. The older cartridges will not work in the newer models.
