Unplug and replug the hard drive
if you have a software/driver for the external HDD uninstall and reinstall
if it doesnot work the issue is with the hard drive
Probably the hard drive has gone bad

What is the largest Hard drive i can put into toshiba Sat Laptop R35 S159

It's 60 gb at the moment, do you mean the internal HD or an external, an external should be OK with 1000 gb, to replace HD in notebook is done from the bottom, remove screw F5 under CD-DVD, remove CD-DVD and there is the hard drive, try 320gb replacement.

Can i format device without deleting content on hard disk

You cannot format any disk without losing everything. When you format a drive you are essintally bringing it back to the state of it's first use. If you can, transfer the data to another storage device until after the format.

If it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken then yes. But if it is the hard drive itself that is broken then no.
From what happened I'm thinking that it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken. That being said, you can easily buy one without the hard drive online. When doing this be sure you know what kind of hard drive is in your Maxtor enclosure. This is important because you need to be sure that your hard drive and enclosure are compatible. Check to see if it uses SATA, ATA, or PATA connectors and then buy the corresponding external hard drive enclosure.
Once you have bought your new empty external hard drive enclosure, it is simply a matter of opening up your Maxtor enclosure and moving the hard drive inside to your newly purchased enclosure and connecting it to your computer.
To avoid problems like this in the future, look into "cloud based storage" to back up all of your data securely online.

Hi. Thanks for your question.
  • Here's what else you can do.
  1. Check the USB cable. Make sure it's connected securely. to make sure test with other device or computer to determine that cable is OK.
  2. Once you know you are using good cable you need to make sure that Hard Drive isn't at fault. Trying to use it in other PC is the best method of making sure that everything is OK with it.

Do not hesitate to come back and ask more if none of these solutions helped you. I am sure one of FixYa expert's will be able to help you.

Hi there,

This is because there is a connection problem between the external drive and the computer. If you have changed cables to no avail, you can open the casing of the external drive where you will find the hard disk inside. Unplug the two cables connected to the harddisk and replug it after a minute. Then try again. If it still does not work, then you need to buy just a usb enclosure and plug the harddisk there to be able to use it again.

Hope this helps. Thank you for using FixYa.

unfortunately it doesnt work like that, you will have to transfer files from the c drive to the f drive which should give you more room on the c drive, or switch the drives around and re install xp on it the you still have access to all your files still but any programs on there will have to be re installed

My SimpleTech 320GB external hard drive is no longer recognized

trying using it on another system and and see if it happens like that. if it does, you may want to get a driver for the hard drive. it is likely the driver is corrupted. try it on another port also.

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash

Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.
