I reformatted 4 times using different programs via Hirens. The Ubuntu disk will not even load to use it as a standalone without installing it. Any other ideas?

OK after doing that DOD, you MUST repartition, and reformat before you can do anything further.

@rkbrown1_rb

If your Dell diagnostics shows no fault on the hardware (hdd, memory, chipset, videocard, etc.) but still same issue occurs, I recommend doing another test using a different utility. Try using Hiren's Boot CD that can be found here and try running the S&M Stress Test 1.9.1 and Video Memory Stress Test 1.7.116. If your computer hangs while doing the stress tests, the video card or CPU might be failing already.

Good Luck.

I did a diagnostic test on a dell inspiron 1525 and everything passed except the hard drive with error code 0142, what does this mean and can it be fixed, thanks.

Hi,

Based on
Dell Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics and Error Codes For Dell Computers - KB Article - 30042,
it is a Hard Drive failure, and you need to replace the Hard Drive.

I suggest to try reinstall windows first before you replace the Hard Drive.

Hope it helps you.

You could run it again, you probably have some bad sectors. The drive might be fine for years or it could die, very hard to tell. Hard drive failure is the number one problems on PC's next to spy-ware and virus's

What I would recommend either way, is back up important files and folder.

To run Lenovo Hard Drive Quick Test from Windows, follow these steps:

I get the error code 2000-0146 only when i run the f12 diagnostic

The 2000-0146 error code indicates a read/write failure of the hard drive. There is at least 1 sector that is failing on the drive. While it is working at the moment, the drive is failing and will over time degrade and eventually fail completely. Backup any important data, then replace the drive.

I wouldn't give much weight to PC doctor, or most other diagnostic software.

There are many legitimate reasons why a program may not be able read data on a HDD.

If the HDD can be formated, then all the sectors are good. Run your windows defrag, and surface test on the drive

Noise from hard disk

Hi ankur_gupta2,

  1. You need to do a full backup of everything on that hard drive.
  2. Once you've done that, depending on the drive manufacturer, go to their website and find the support section. Most common drives today have diagnostic software that you can download and test the drive for error.
  3. If you want to run a quick test within your operating system, (I'm assuming it's Windows) Click on My Computer
  4. Right click on the drive that's making the noise possible C:\ Local Disk
  5. Go down to Properties and click
  6. Go to tools tab
  7. Click on Check Now in the Error Checking section
  8. Click on both check boxes to repair and recover bad sectors.
If this finds no problems, then it maybe that the drive is just getting old, either case, you're best off to check for errors, and go to the manufacturer's site for additional help.

Good Luck,

Mark

Hp pavilion dv8000 logging off - sometimes won't

There are so many things that could cause this particular problem. From a bad hard drive, to bad ram, to a bug or virus, to simply just your anti virus software, or some other software not closing out.

I would start with a hard drive diagnostic and see if that passes ok. Also, run a chkdsk on the drive to make sure everything in the file system is clean. Do a virus scan to check for bugs. And then run the system file checker to make sure all windows system files are orignal and unchanged. You can also check the admin event logs for any clues as to erros or problems.

A simple hard drive diagnostic can be found here - http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3 about mid page is a download button, install it and run from windows, easy to follow.

Run a chckdsk on the drive. Go into My Computer, right click on your hard drive listed, left click on properties and in the pop up window, choose the tools tab and click the Check Now button under error checking. This will schedule a chkdsk during the next boot. Reboot the pc and let it run. Also, make sure that both boxes are checked. One for auto fix system errors and one for bad sector check before clicking ok. You'll see what I am talking about as you go through the steps.

Check for viruses, if you dont have an anti-virus software, then go download the free version of AVG. It works well. You can get that at http://free.grisoft.com

And the other thing to check is the event log. Go into your control panel, open the Admin Tools icon and then open the Event Viewer section. You can check for erros in windows in those logs to maybe identify a problem.

If you do all that and still have a problem, post a reply.
