Question about HP Compaq Presario S5100NX (DM172A#ABA) PC Desktop
I have a compaq presario s5100nx and the problem is when i push the power button i can hear the fans come on but the monitor is still black with the power button on the monitor flashing orange...what do i do? i have tried the pull the battery out trick and others i googled around for now i am just stuck.
Additionally to what the previous answer stated, the fact at the fans spin, etc. Does not necessarily mean the PC is running. Check for hard drive activity, (hard drive spins too unless solid state drive), blinking green lights and processor noise as PC is restarting... do you hear OS chime? Stuff like that... you could try another monitor or tv (if possible through an hdmi port) to see if you can get a signal out of the computer.

No monitor stated, ! wow. (hard to help this)
generic PC 101:
1: test this monitor on any other PC.(vga)
2: test this PC on any other VGA monitor .
either test above quickly proves which end is bad.
easy no?, just one simple test and 1/2 the causes go byebye...
if the PC goes dead the monitor goes to sleep mode. and HP monitor shows yellow power. lamp.
I will do simple monitor tests now
even with NO PC connected. (basics)
1: most monitors will even a sign on message, with no PC.
a HP logo graphic, Compaq logo shows. or some text.
newer monitors show logo message "energystar" every time.
then shows..... (the last means PC is setup wrong)
OUT OF RANGE.
errors. then goes black.
if it shows nothing ever, the monitors 15 year old
CCLF tubes inside are now dead, 99% are now.
the LCD back light lamps died long ago , on most.
if the back lamps are good from year 2003,.wow
then.... (like finding 1995 car that runs)
the monitors OSD screen on most will work now.
on demand !by YOU.
for a few seconds, lacking a PC connection.
power on and hammer the menu key see OSD.? even for 1second.
This works best with working PC, the OSD will not work at all with a dead PC but some screens can be tricked into showing the OSD for few seconds at power on, no PC conn., (it's super good to know these facts, when screen is dead or partly)
you asked about the magic batteries. (cake walk)
well sure, all 15 year old PC have bad RTC coin cell battery on the DESK top , inside mother board.
if never serviced for 15 years it is bad.
replace it, (below 2.9vdc is bad battery(metered)
remove it look at number and get one at walfart.
2032 cells are common
(camera dept, or watches)
my nice test monitor (tech)
HP lE2000x (led) nice and small.
power on (no PC connected)
blue lamp power button glows every time it gets power.
Large menu pops UP, shows scanning VGA/DVI and more for 2 to 3 seconds
then a large white menu pops
and shows "monitor going to sleep" in clear English. (means PC is dead , this case missing)
the blue led power lamp goes from blue to yellow
and screen is now black. (all 100% normal)
these are what all LCD do powered on.
if the monitor is totally 100% dead all ways from Sunday, then it is. as all are now with CCLF tubes
99.9% are dead, if used.
the lamps last 20,000 hrs and DIE.

your driver is available here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=363427
scroll down to where it says original drivers (in blue)
the second one is the network addaptor. download it it your desktop and then install and restart the computer.

Go to bootdisk.com and download boot files for your operating system (ex. Windows XP). There are software for floppy disk which is the easier way to get your boot files. If you do not have a floopy you will have to get the CD files, there you have all the instructions how to get the CD. Once you get the files, insert the floopy or the CD and reboot your computer. The filse should be installed automatically, if not do it manually and reboot computer again.

refer to the users manual, or download if possible.
Yellow/Orange could mean that the computer is In Hibernate/Sleep Mode et,c. usually restored by pressing certain keyboard keys Or pressing and holding the power on button For 4 seconds or more.
Other Possibility ( graphics/VGA driver or device, Corrupt Or missing )
You could change the graphics card, Or remove the motherboards Cmos Battery, for 10 seconds, which will restore the Computers Bios, default settings.

Could be one of two things: either the power supply is going bad or the RAM is either going bad or isn't seated properly inside.
First thing I would try would be to re-seat all the memory chips inside the computer. There could be up to 4 sticks of memory in some computers. If this doesn't work, try pulling the memory out of the computer one stick and a time and booting the PC. If it boots, you've found your bad memory stick. Put all the others back in and replace the faulty one.
If none of this works, you might consider calling HP (maker for compaq) for support on getting the power supply replaced.

boot into the bios or if bios support diagnostics boot into that (typically F1 of F10 on power up) If that is not an option boot off the CD recovery disk and run diagnostics on the HD. Let me know we can take it from there.
