Question about HP Computers & Internet

1 Answer

A few days ago when I was on the the laptop anytime I pressed the letters mjkluio , numbers would appear instead. I tried to press the num lock button and it made no difference. Nothing would fix it so I set the computer aside and left it for a few days. Now I am back on it and the letters I was having problems with before are working but I just tried to hit num lock to get the numbers instead of those letters and nun lock won't turn on. The light next to the button indicating its on will not turn on either. I am unsure how to test the other buttons on the top row (f1 f2f etc.) But on the main page nothing happens when I press f1 or any of the other "f" buttons, but I'm unsure if anything should happen. Is something wrong with my numlock button or all the top row keys? This is an HP pavilion dv4 notebook pc

The Function keys up top will not do anything when not in a program that has them set.

The num lock key on most laptops does not itself work: it must be pressed in conjunction with another key. This is normally the "FN" key at the lower left.

Please try pressing the "FN" key while you press the "num lock" key and see if this now works.

Keyboard typing numbers instead letters

Hi Tiffany,
The Numlock on your laptop is on that is why instead of letters you are getting numbers. In order to get it back to letters please check the key that says Num Lock where the green light is lit up all you have to do is to press it again to disable Num Lock. If in case you can't see it you may want to try pressing Fn + F11 once and check if you are still getting numbers, press Fn + F11 to disable it. Hope it helps.

When you type the letter u i o p j k l m number will apear instead of letter why?

Usually it's because the number lock is locked on.

Check your keyboard carefully for a key that reads "num lock" press it once and you should be good to go :)

p.s. If it's in blue sometimes you need to press FN + 'num lock"

Hope this helps!

Typing numbers instead of letters

Your keyboard has "extra" keys:
* print-screen / system-request
* scroll-lock
* pause / break
* num lock

Press that "num lock" key.
For a laptop keyboard, you may have to hold down the 'FN' key,
at the same time that you press "num lock", to enable/disable this function.

Instead of the letter ''O'' I get the number 6 on my keyboard.

When the RH side of the keboard types numbers instead of letters then the Num Lock (number lock) key has been pressed.
Press the Num Lock Key again to return to letters again, usually this is usually done by pressing the Fn key plus and probably the Scroll keys, this key will be also marked NumLk, and there will be a LED light that will indicate when the number lock is on.

You need to press the NUM Lock key.
The NUM lock key is usually the same key as the ScrLk key but to select the NUM lock you need to press and hold down the Shift key and then press the NumLk/ScrLk key. A LED light will light up to indicate the number keypad is on.
