Did you get a ac adaptor with your player? if not you can get one on ebay the # is ADPV26A 20.00 and it plugs into the side of the player to charge the battery

From your description, it sounds like a bad battery pack. You may find it hard to locate one, maybe check on Ebay every once in a while, or take the pack apart and see what kind of cells are in it.
Probably not what you wanted to hear, but replacing the pack will probably fix it.
