Question about RCA DCM425 DIGITAL CABLE MODEM (RCADCM425)
Just you to your sister, and nobody else? All the time? Complain to Earthlink. They will probably give you an excuse, like "that happens from time to time". Real answer: cheap internet connections and software that drops out.
We have our own VoIP box that cost $50 (ObiTalk), pay $60 a year to PhonePower (one of many), and have had rock steady connections. We get free Canada calls, and a half hour of free overseas every month. If you pay more than $5 a month rethink your provider.

SOURCE: do I need to open ports?
There are no ports to open on the DCM425, as it's a cable modem, not a firewall. Earthlink/Time Warner will likely not be truthful when it comes to blocking ports on their end. Would it be possible to change the port that your PS2 is using?
Same goes for the bittorrent question, only I'd switch to uTorrent and different ports as well.

First try connection the Yellow ethernet cable from the rca modem to your computer's network connection. If you get a connection this way, then your modem will work with a ethernet cable. If not, then call Comcast for help. The modem ethernet out to computer port must be connected to the wan line of the router. Then you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer network connection to one of the 4 ports of the router. For wireless connections you must set up the router and wireless adaptor with the same settings to connect. Follow the routers directions.

From the back of your modem, follow the ethernet cable to your PC (in). Mark or remember this location. Remove this cable from the PC and insert it into the INTERNET port on your router. Then take another ethernet cable (usually supplied) and insert one end into the ETHERNET port of the router, and the other end into your PC (where you originally removed it. Remember to check all connections and plug in the modem. You should now be good to go! If your PC has an installation Wizard, you can browse thru it as well.

SOURCE: Hi, I want to set
1) Make sure the cable is plugged into the Internet port (or whatever the appropriate port is, since you didn't specify exactly which router).
2) At your router's configuration page, make sure DHCP (Automatic) is selected.
3) After connecting to the router, if it still does not work, open up the command window by going to the search box in the Start Menu or click Run... and type "cmd".
4) Type "ipconfig /release". Wait until this is finished.
5) Type "ipconfig /renew". Wait until this is finished.
This should have given you an IP Address.
6) Try to connect to a website.
